    Snow Hits Tokyo

    Significant acululation of snow is pretty rare around Tokyo, so the snowstorm that hit the city today is pretty big news. As the video above shows, the snowfall of between 10 and 20 centimeters has created some pretty beautiful scenes.

    The Freezing Waterfalls of Oiwasan Nissekiji Temple

    A video showing some folks enduring freezing cold waterfalls at the head temple for the Shingon sect of Buddhism:

    From the Yomiuri:

    Shingon Buddhist followers stand under a waterfall while praying for good health at Oiwasan Nissekiji temple in Kamiichimachi, Toyama Prefecture, on Monday. About 70 people joined the ascetic training that is conducted annually on daikan, which is said to be the coldest day of the year. The participants stood beneath six six-meter high waterfalls behind the temple while chanting a sutra as the temperature hovered around 0 C.

    Ice Fishing in Hokkaido

    A news report about ice fishing in Hokkaido:

    The fish being caught in the video are Japanese pond smelt, which apparently taste pretty good when fried in tempura batter or grilled.

    Red Pandas Play in Hokkaido Snow

    The male news anchor listening to the narration of this news story about Red Pandas [also known as Lesser Pandas] playing in the snow at Hokkaido’s ultra-popular Asahiyama Zoo experience a “kawaii” overload:

    The zoo will be open this year until the 29th, and is scheduled to re-open on January 2nd.
