Air Asia’s Hideous Make-up

A Japanese news show recently reported on a group of Japanese flight attendants who had been hired to work for Air Asia Japan, a new discount airline. They flew to Air Asia’s headquarters in Malaysia to undergo special training that would shed them of their Japanese working style and make them look stronger and more expressive.

To make the transformation, they will need to change their make-up:

Their teacher walks around, pointing to each Japanese woman and saying that they aren’t wearing enough make-up. They need makeovers!

The Japanese women are shocked by Air Asia’s makeup style. It is super thick. And what’s with all that blue around their eyes? One woman says she wouldn’t be able to walk the streets of Tokyo looking that way. But to keep working at Air Asia, they have no choice but to accept it.

As a Malaysian, i’d say that this is because Malaysian stewardesses wear alot of makeup because of influences from Emirates and Qatar Airways.

If anything, pretty much everything about Malaysian flight services (MAL & AirAsia) has been influenced by the Middle Eastern airliners, and it all bows down to AirAsia’s Tony Fernandes who brought in influences from the Middle East and his days at Virgin Corp. twhen creating AirAsia.

  Like these women, those employees are not being forced to work for the company. They can always walk away if they don’t like it. I see no problem with having a corporate makeup policy. It’s the ignorance (contempt?) of Japanese sensibilities (Air Asia is starting LCC services on domestic Japanese routes, no?) all in the name of corporate standardization- I’m afraid they are making the same mistake of many other foreign companies who tried to enter the Japanese market w/o modifying their policies/products for local conditions- see Vodaphone’s ill-fated attempt to sell non-Japanese market specific cellphones.

        So unless the domestic cabin attendants have different uniform standards, then this is probably a localization fail.

  I saw fat western women with very heavy cosmetic at Japanese companies.

In my experience Japanese women generally wear pretty heavy slap when going out but the style is more muted than that “zombie eyes” look.

When my wife joined Virgin Atlantic she was sent on a style and make-up course. I’m not surprised that other airlines have such courses. It’s part of the corporate image.

I always thought Japanese girls caked it on too thick to begin with. This doesn’t seem much different from what I often saw on trains. The most important thing to react to here is: blue!?!?

What a complete load of BS. Cabin attendants all over the world wear thick make-up because it’s DARK in the cabin! They would seem as if they wear no make-up at all if they put on a casual one.
