Foxconn CEO Praises Japanese, Bashes Koreans
Foxconn CEO Terry Gou recently announced that his company would be cooperating with Japan’s Sharp Corporation. When talking about the deal, he praised Japanese business practices and bashed Koreans:
“We’ve confidence that after getting into these new technologies, within one to two years we’ll quickly be successful” with Android, Windows and Apple iOS, Gou said according to Business Week. “The Sharp deal will help us to defeat Samsung.”
Gou apparently nurtures some personal animus against Samsung, which dates back from the time when Samsung testified against Taiwanese companies in an investigation by the European Commission on price-fixing in the flat panel industry.
“I respect the Japanese and especially like their execution and communication styles,” he said. “Unlike the Koreans, they will not hit you from behind.”
The Chosun Ilbo’s English translation may be a toned down version of what was actually said. Japanese blogs report that Guo used the word “高麗棒子,” which is a Chinese ethnic slur for Koreans. Japanese bloggers also claim that Guo did said that Japanese “will never stab you in the back” (日本人は絶対後ろから刃物を刺さない).
