New York’s New Japanese Taxis

Last year, New York city decided to convert its taxi cabs into Nissan NV200′s. Here’s a news report about the unveiling of the new taxis:

“The Nissan NV200 unveiled today will be the safest, most comfortable and most convenient taxi the city has ever had,” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. “New York City cabs have always been iconic, and now they will set a new standard. The 600,000 passengers who use taxis to get around every day deserve the cutting-edge technology and top-of-the-line safety features that this model delivers.”

i do miss the old “checkers” from years ago even with holes in the floor (actually watching the streets of nyc fly by) and anyone who has ever sat on the jump seat…. A few years ago they had the Honda Oddessy – that is a nice ride. i am sure this will be too.

They look nice and comfortable, as well as able to hold shopping bags and suitcases a lot more easily. They’re also probably a lot more fuel efficient than the old 5.0-liter Crown Vics.

I recall reading somewhere that a hybrid or electric version of the vehicle was in development for later release.

Great. Certainly a positive move and a BIG plus for Nissan. They had to beat some intense competition to snaffle this.

Makes one wonder, why in the land of the origin of the NV200 and other innovative models, that the taxi clunkers that run around here still exist.

Some sort of sentimental reason to hang on to 1980′s type vehicles with all their inadequacies???

Hopefully Nissan has set the pace for here.

there are many things that are made here but not utilized or even available. modern cars as taxis as you mentioned (although i did see some taxi nissan leafs at my local station but with the electricty problem here, well), and medical equipment is another. what is up with that?

So much for supporting American auto workers, whats the point of a bail out when no one buys the cars? It doesn’t help when they are inferior to the Asian manufacturers. I buy a Korean car before I bought an American car.
