Tsunami Evacuation Towers

    A video shows a new tsunami evacuation tower built in the coastal city of Omaezaki in Shizuoka prefecture:

    The tower is 12 meters tall and has space for about one hundred people. It has both stairs and ramps, making it accessible to elderly and disabled people. The top of the tower also has chains that people can hold on to, in case the water level is high and there is a danger of being swept away. (construction cost: Over $400,000)

    For comparison, here is a video from last year that shows a tsunami evacuation tower in another area of Shizuoka prefecture:

    As you can see, it is somewhat smaller, has only stairs, and lacks chains.
