An old American artillery shell was recently discovered on the grounds of a high school in Okinawa. As part of the disposal effort, over a thousand people were temporarily evacuated from the area:

The 8-inch artillery shell was discovered during construction work on the grounds of Shuri High School. The school is located in an area where heavy fighting took place during the 1945 Battle of Okinawa. The shell is likely left over from that time.

The disposal work was carried out by Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Forces. Prior to the work, 1088 people who lived within a 199 meter radius of the shell were evacuated. Local roads were also closed. The evacuation lasted from 8:00AM until 2:00PM. The disposal work was successful and nobody was injured.

It is not the first time, and probably not the last time, that unexploded shells and bombs have been found in the area.
