Chinese Company Will Manufacture Products in Japan

Haier Group, a China-based company that manufactures appliances, has purchased the “Aqua” brand of washing machines from its Japanese owner. They plan to continue manufacturing in Japan:

The brand was formerly for Sanyo Electric Co’s washing machines. Haier agreed last year to acquire the brand from Sanyo parent Panasonic Corp.

The fast-growing Chinese maker said that out of the total sales target, it aims to log ¥35 billion via the Aqua brand and ¥15 billion from the Haier brand. Haier already sells home appliances under its own brand in Japan.

Maintaining factories in Japan is probably a good idea. Although Sanyo’s appliances weren’t exactly considered the best in Japan, Chinese-made products tend to have a much worse reputation.

Sanyo appliances were great! They were just a couple of years behind National Panasonic, in the sense that they didn’t have the latest bogus “advances” that National had, that did nothing and upped the price needlessly. (Stuff like air conditioners that sense where you were and what your mood was or whatever.)

A Chinese state-owned enterprises like Haier should not be allowed to buy local companies.

“Haier already sells home appliances under its own brand in Japan.”Haier will strip all the technology and other assets from the Aqua brand and it will disappear.

Normally I’d agree with you, however that will get Japan booked for trade infractions i.e. protectionism.

Yes I agree.

But it’s still wrong,wrong wrong. Some people think China is a capitalist country but it is not. It is a communist
dictatorship. These companies are agents of that government.

North Korea is a dictatorship disguised as communism. China is a communist-capitalist state. Heck, my older brother is married to the daughter of a former regional governor-cum-auto parts businessman.

Agents of the government… meh. Speaking of which, Blackwater was a direct extension of Bush’s paramilitary army.

Chinese & Korean companies – Haier, LG, Samsung, etc - have been BIG for sometime now. Household words in many places.

Quite amazing that they haven’t penetrated the market here much earlier. With the yen’s value and the depressed economy though, I imagine that they will certainly make an impression over the next few years, after some initial consumer caution.

I expect cars will follow at some stage.

At the moment I prefer the local brands – but already many such goods are Japanese only in name and are basically built elsewhere.

No-one can halt this trend.

I see this going quite solidly the way any Chinese takeover of any American company has gone. They ‘plan to continue’ manufacturing where the factory exists, until at which time they can line up a factory to do it for much cheaper labor and with substandard materials ‘back home’ in China. Then the quality begins to suffer, and the working conditions deteriorate, until you’re left with the same plastic crap China produces for everyone, in a toxic health-risk of a factory, but this time under the brand name they purchased.

I always try to avoid buying made in china whenever I can – pretty much anywhere else in the world is better than their crap.

On what do you base your observation of their “crap”? Factual? Anecdotal? Intolerance?

I think you’ll find there are all levels of goods produced – high end to low end.

Likely general observations. Can’t blame him really. Counterfeit products from China present real dangers because its makers often put the well-being of its customers post-sale (food not poisonous prior to preparation/consumption, electronics don’t burst into flames while being used as intended, the list can go on forever) as the lowest priority.

Those that aren’t have a very variable product quality that many people are uncomfortable with.

If you ever visit China, here’s an advice: dine at McDonald’s. Unhealthy fast food beats local delicacy that makes you vomit uncontrollably any day.

Sorry – but “general observations” and “can’t blame him really” don’t in my opinion justify calling chinese made goods almost the crappiest in the world.

And of the literally 100,000s of differing parts & products coming out of china yearly, what is the breakdown in % of good vs crap? Please some facts.

I think china is going thru the same phase that japan had to endure in the 60′s & 70′s – that is trying to shake off the cheap0-shit, low-qual image – you know “Jap-Krap”.

This tarring with the same brush has more than a whiff of racial intolerance.

No – actually it’s probably one of the oldest reasons in civilisation why not to buy something.

And please some data on % of crap coming out of china to deserve your tag of pretty much the crappiest in the world.

If they use quality material and pay for the QA I don’t see the problem with that. You realize that the garbage cheap stuff you get from China is because it is cheap and the importer is making big bucks because it is cheap. If you willing to pay the correct price I am sure they can manufacture a good quality stuff. It’s History repeating itself.
