Gyunoya? Copying Yoshinoya in Thailand

Japanese beef bowl chain Yoshinoya is preparing to return to Bangkok.

Thai people have been without Yoshiyo beef bowls since 1999. However, it seems that those who don’t want to wait a few more months can try the next best thing – beef bowls from Gyunoya:

Gyunoya looks and feels like a Yoshinoya – it’s name, logo, menu, and even the designs on its bowls are all clearly meant to copy the famous chain. Apparently it’s owned by a Japanese person, and it was recently re-done so it would look less like a blatant copy of Yoshinoya.

For the moment, it seems that the real Yoshinoya is most concerned about preparing its first new restaurant in Bangkok, and won’t be taking legal action against Gyunoya.

The overall styling of the restaurant including the font, colours, logos on bowls and so on, constitute “trade dress”, which is a kind of trademark.

If Yoshinoya have allowed the copycat to get away with it for 12 years, it’s probably too late to take legal action.

Wow…. the copycat’s food must have been really, really good! Just watch the reporter in the video chow down all those
bowls of food. (or was he just really hungry?)

By the way, I want to report a crime. Yoshinoya’s beef bowls at their U.S. restaurants are absolutely terrible. The rice is always
undercooked or overcooked. The onions are crunchy. They taste like prison food. I’ve tried it at their L.A. area locations
as well as the one on 42nd St in New York City. All terrible. I do not understand how Yoshinoya’s corporate headquareters
in Japan can possibly allos such terrible food to be served at their US restaurants.

They’re probably not aware of the quality control issue or have long decided that Americans do not care about the difference in quality between the US chains and Japan. If it LOOKS Japanese, its good enough to sell!

Considering beef is one of the most consumed foods in America and the quality is generally pretty low, I’d say they don’t care about quality control too much in the first place, regardless of whether it’s “foreign” or not.

Yoshinoya is a fast food restaurant chain, what else do you expect? At least you don’t get shaver razors, nose booger and cocaine powder embedded in the rice…

I agree, the “quality” of the beef is atrocious, more fat and gristle than pieces of meat (which itself is harder than vulcanized rubber). Nasty stuff.

this is like saying burger king rippoed off mcdonalds. a burger is a burger, a beef bowl is a beef bowl. also, yoshinoya is easily the most disgusting excuse for japanese food. one could do much better than to copy them.
