Japanese-style Duckface

A TV program looks at how foreigners view the “duck mouth” facial expression that many Japanese girls make when posing for photos:

A quick check with people on the street finds that 8 out of 10 Japanese people think it looks cute, while only 2 out of 10 foreigners think so.

Maybe if they learn how to make a proper Japanese duck mouth, they’ll appreciate its cuteness? The program has two Shibuya gals give a proper “cute” makeover to the show’s foreign reporter and an American volunteer:

To increase the cuteness of the duck mouth, some special make-up is necessary. For some reason, it looks freakishly horrible….

oh heavens, “duck face.” i thought i was the only one who thought that “duck face” was ridiculous. hardly a poll but i can`t believe even two people from other countries think it`s cute.

Nope, sorry Japan, but you can’t do anything to make the “duck face/mouth/whatever” cute. Have to agree with that Canadian women, “trying too hard”.

Notice it’s always “Japan” this, “Japan” that, generalizations everywhere. Why is it that whenever a ‘sub culture’ or segment of Japanese society does something, all of a sudden it applies to the entire nation and its people? Like whales for instance, many Japanese do not eat it, yet, somehow all of the country is demonized for the actions of some of its citizens.

I mean,who is to say that many Japanese do NOT think this ‘duckface’ is cool, in fact looks downright stupid (maybe the older generation).

To be fair, though, those aren’t the two people I’d expect to see using a duck face in a Purikura.

Looking through all my Purikura with girls (in Shibuya), none of them are doing the duck face…
I don’t think it’s that bad, though. Weird when you point it out, but I never really noticed it before

I think the problem is cuteness and childishness are grouped together that makes it all creepy. That and that girl in the top photo is just made uglier by all that make-up and all that trying. Sad and yuck. Can someone tell the girls that turning your feet in and trying to look like you can’t walk is a big turn-off, too?

Is the pigeon toed thing on purpose? I thought there were just an unusually large amount of girls in Japan who were pigeon toed and couldn’t help it. If it’s done on purpose then that’s just really sad.

I’m not really sure why they put makeup on the guy…but the girl’s purikura came out cute despite the makeup looking bad irl. I don’t really care how people hold their lips in their photos, it’s their choice.

Meh, I just don’t feel the whole cute fetish in Asia (Japan’s not the only one). I respect it, but I just don’t care for it. Also, it looks completely horrid with those people…
