Video: F1 Race Car Hits Man

Today’s most-viewed video clip on YouTube Japan shows a Japanese man getting hit by an Sebastien Buemi’s Formula 1 race car:

Although it looks like a crazy man with a death wish, it was actually an accident and the man (an F1 staff person) walked away without any major injuries:

Apparently unable to see the car coming behind an inflatable arch, the marshall ran across the strait while Buemi was performing.

Seeing the Buemi’s car ahead, the man tried to leap over it but clipped the back of the vehicle, somersaulting into a fence.

However, he appeared uninjured by the collision and was seen to get up and walk away after stewards ran to his aid.

Takes a special kind of thinking to run onto a road with checking, when you know there are race cars zipping around. Especially when you’re a marshall and are expected to know how to act around a track.

The man was an event staff for the race. Although it’s hard to see, he’s wearing a grey shirt with “STAFF” written on the back. Buemi was originally only slated to run 3 loops down the course, but turned and tried to go for a 4th one when this happened. I swear this guy has amazing reflexes.

Wow. That could have been much worse. I’m reminded of the horrific incident that occurred at the South African Grand Prix in 1977 that killed driver Tom Pryce and race marshal Frederik van Vuuren.

He should’ve done a backflip instead. I can’t shake the idea that he actually tried to either outrun the car, or just ran to go across an area that could potentially have a car going through..
