Beer Can Pouring Perfection

A Japanese news program introduces a new product that helps people pour canned beer:

It’s Beer Hour, a handy beer server created by the Takara Tomy. By attaching the device to a can of beer, one can achieve the perfect balance of beer and head when pouring into a glass.

There is a switch on the side of the device that turns on a spinning mixer. When the switch is off, normal beer will come out. When the switch is on, you’ll get foam.

The device is available at Amazon.co.jp for 2,800 yen.

I visited one of Asahi’s factories a while back and in the end they taught us the correct way to poor a beer.

First you pour straight towards the bottom of the glass causing foam to form, and create a layer of a couple of centimeters of foam. The rest of the beer you pour against the side of the glass to get the clear liquid.They said the reason for this was that the layer of foam prevented the carbon dioxide from escaping into the air and therefor enhancing the taste.
I dunno if it is actually true, but anyway I think this wouldn’t work with this type of device since you’re actually adding the foam last instead of first.

If you’re not doing it like that anyway then you’re doing it wrong. You’d get thrown out of the country if you poured a beer wrong in Australia!

Successful beer =

chilled clean glass (no hint of greasiness); pour a head and let the rest slip succintly down the side on a tilt , straightening up to finish.

That contraption appears to “agitate” a head from the remaining dregs. If so, A Big No-No!

When I was a kid, we used a nail or a pocket knife to open our beer cans and WE LIKED IT THAT WAY.

Not British myself, but I did a tour in the north trying a new ‘real ale’ in each pub. I’ve been pissed off with the head in Japan until I saw a diagram for the servers showing how badly to serve it! Gotta be consistent to be Japanese: especially when you’re wrong.

I will never understand why people in Japan serve beer with a giant head of foam on it. Is it because they enjoy 15%-20% less beer for their money? First time I ordered a beer in Japan I sent it back because of the foam.
And seriously do you need a device to create foam? Just pour it clumsily into a tall glass, it will make foam, anyone can do it. To pour a beer with no foam you have to actually know what you are doing.

yea, and the fact that there are no “standard” measures (well from my experience) means that its just another way to rip you off. At least in the UK you know your pint is a pint.
