Okinawan Protesters Cover New American Fence With Anti-Base Banners

The U.S. military has placed a new fence around the area where it plans to build a new runway as part of the relocation plan for Marine Corps Air Station Futenma. This clip from ATV shows anti-base protesters hanging banners on the new fence:

10 billion to move 10 thousand marines to Guam. That’s about a million for each marine.

Japan should insist that you have a return ticket when you enter the country so the government
wouldn’t have to pay to remove these penniless people.

I’m sick and tired of emasculated internet Japanophiles constantly talking smack about the US armed forces in Japan. Sure, there are a few bad apples that spoil the bunch, but overall I think the American military presence in Japan is a good thing.

I don’t want to guess but could it be you think the American military presence in Japan is “a good thing” because you think America is protecting Japan from Really Bad Guys (in the same way they’re protecting Americans from the looming threat of Radical Islam, right?)

I’m a woman (hence emasculated, I guess?) on the internet and presumably a Japanophile since I truly love Japan. Yeah, I also grew up in Okinawa, the daughter of an American soldier and am also Japanese. My husband is an American serviceman as well. I’m very aware of the American military culture and attitude, especially towards their host countries. I don’t happen to think the American presence in Okinawa or in Japan is a good thing as most of them I’ve met have no respect for the culture and feelings of Okinawans or Japanese and are very aware that they live on a little piece of America far from the actual country.

I do agree with you on one thing, I’m all for growing some cojones, flying to Okinawa and heading to one of the bars marines frequent. Where I differ is that once there I’d encourage anyone to stop the marines before they rape any more little girls, drive drunk and crash or rough up and rob people then hide behind the barbed wire of their military bases.

Oh please. The bases provide jobs and protection for Japan. One of the reasons why they became an economic power is because most of their defense is provided by the US which saves them a bundload of money. You’re overexaggerating. A few bad apples don’t represent the whole.

if Russian Imperialism is chipping away at your sovereignty by supporting dissident movements within your own borders (Georgia), preventing ethnically distinct republics from carrying out their own self-determination (Chechnya), and meddling in your internal politics (The Ukraine), I think I would much rather prefer American “Imperialism”.
