Video: Helicopter Flights Over Fukushima Daiichi to Measure Radiation

Japan’s Self-Defense Forces have released footage showing how they have been measuring radiation levels above the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant:

The readings are taken from about 900 meters above the plant. Soldiers wear heavy duty protective gear. As their helicopters do not have built-in measuring equipment, it looks like they have rigged together a system that uses handheld equipment, duct tape, and notebook computers for radiation measurements and infrared thermography.

Well those guys in th helicopter are probably going to die of cancer in the next few years.

So being right by a nuclear power plant that is leaking radiation, is no more dangerous than not being by one?

If this is your way of proving why these troops will end up dying from excessive radiation exposure, I have a bridge I’d like to sell you.

Radiation has an extremely short range and the radionuclides leaking out are all bound to water.
There is no open reactor spewing radioactive ash at them.

They’d have to fly much lower and longer to get any meaningful dosis.

US soldiers are far more likely to die of radiation-induced cancer from exposure to depleted-uranium munitions than these guys.

I mean that the civilians in Iraq also have a good chance of getting cancer because of the uranium, not just the soldiers.

Yeah, I thought so too! Why full body suits, and masks (even equipment is in clear plastic bags), but NO GLOVES on anyone! This is not a case of one persons mistake or carelessness. Either there is NO RISK or SYSTEMIC INCOMPETANCE. You decide.
