Shanghai Motor Show: Foreign Cars Scanned For Radiation

The 2011 Shanghai Motor Show has begun. ATV reports that Chinese authorities have been using geiger counters to scan every vehicle imported for display at the show:

The radiation scans are apparently not limited to Japanese cars. Every foreign car is being scanned.

In late March, Chinese authorities turned away a Mitsui container ship after claiming that they detected 3.5 microsieverts per hour on the ship. The ship has stopped in Tokyo on March 17th.

On Monday, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association announced that it had begun radiation testing on all vehicle shipments for export and the domestic market.

Given the rather horrible safety of Chinese cars (youtube “chery crash test”), I’m pretty sure radiation is the LEAST of a Chinese driver’s problems…

China will have to scan everything from everywhere including anything with a domestic label/brand because carpetbaggers will definitely take the opportunity to buy up degraded goods and pawn them off in different packaging. If Japan dumps anything they deem unfit for consumption, someone somewhere not necessarily yakuza will try to sell it to third world countries. China gets shipments of toxic garbage like broken computers and medical waste from first world countries like Japan all the time so why not radioactive material? It’s business as usual when the third world is at the mercy of the first world.

Pretty sure the money angle is “give China even more brib- ahem, ‘development aid’ and the reading of a random spike in background radiation (likely already slightly higher in China because of all the pollution in the air) will no longer be labeled as ‘dangerously high levels’ requiring an entire cargo ship be sent back”

Japan should get some balls and step up testing of Chinese food imports for traces of the human feces they use as fertilizer. Turnabout is fair play.
