No, it was just a lame attempt to milk some PR from a current event. Look at the bloody nice footballers and their vast respect for some people on the other side of the world.

If we had to have a moment of silence for every tragedy somewhere in the world, there wouldn’t be time to play the game.

It’s SPORTS. Let the Red Cross ask me to sympathize with the worlds problems, not a sports team.

You know, goes to a website, types a comment sure to upset or rile people, then goes away never to reply further.

Oh, but the ‘hit and run’ person DOES come back regularly to see the responses to their hit pieces. Sits there on their laptop and chuckles at how ‘clever’ and ‘brilliant’ they are.

They expected the fans to have the basic human respect to shut up for 60 short seconds to note one of the worst natural disasters this decade.

Shouting “Konnichiwa bitches” is deliberately rude to the teams, to the other spectators, and to Japan.

It is plainly uncivilised behaviour and there is no excuse for it.

I remember when I was overseas at a Sporting event when the spokesperson asked the spectators to pay respects to the lives lost at 9/11. Maybe I should have yelled that it was a good thing that 3000 Americans got their ass burned in the World Trade Towers. Stay Classy Von, because you’re only adding ammunition to why Americans have such a bad name in the world.

As an American and as a fan of soccer, I am shocked and appalled at the behavior of the spectators in this video. Thank you spectators in this video for reminding me why the rest of the world hates us.

I agree, as a fellow Yank and soccer fan, that there is no excuse for what the spectators did. I have not been following soccer as long as you, so I’m wondering – are you telling us that soccer fans are normally never rude in public, or that only American soccer fans are ever rude in public?

There are rude fans everywhere and in almost any sport but the behavior of the people in this video is, IMO, beyond rude. Was a minute of silence for disaster victims too much to ask? ..Part of me is pleased to see people so pumped about a soccer game though..but the “konnichiwa bitches” was just bad…

Soccer tends to attract upper middle-class people in the US, so this is likely a better behaved crowd. You don’t want to see a NY Yankees mob.

Before you throw out worthless opinions, have an iota of a clue. Soccer is played by upper middle-class people in the US, but the fans aren’t anything special.

The #1 supporters’ group for the US Mens’ National Team is called “The American Outlaws” and they drink, sing, and fance with vulgar and comedic songs all day and night. They wear bandannas over their faces.

They’re much worse than the people at a Yankees game.

It’s a mixed bag in America.
On one hand, you get the crowd that likes to see themselves as “cultured” in the ways of the world outside America. I suppose in a way this group isn’t much different than the prawn brigade which has grown in Europe?
On the other, there are a lot of immigrants and 2nd or 3rd generation fans who tend to be more working class. There is a strong tendency to compare everything to English soccer as well, which is unfortunate because the EPL and their fans are kind of pish. The Germans have it figured out.

This also happened in the Uefa Champions League match between Manchester United and Marseille in England.
The minute silence was ended early because some French fans where jeering during the silence and the Manchester United fans where disgusted and booed the away fans for their lack of respect.

What gets me more than some disrespectful douchebag at a soccer match is the people who generalize everyone. Stereotypes are stupid and anyone who believes that everyone from anywhere is exactly the same should be shot. Just because 1 dumbass in the stands has no respect does not mean every other American would do the same. All I can say is I really hope that he got his ass beat after yelling that and that would be still taking it lightly.

I don’t mean to generalise but when I heard of this incident, I kind of thought it would be an American spectator as opposed to an Argentinian one…incidents like this are so unfortunate. The football (soccer) world has shown so much solidarity; given how football supporters are rare in America, I’d expect American football supporters to be better than your run-of-the-mill American in regards to showing compassion and solidarity.

Some drunken slob 1,000′s of kilometers away yells a crude remark. Why give this incident any time at all? It has no relative value. If Obama said it ….well yes!

Actually to comment on the incident at all, it was more noticeable that the other calling & yelling seemed to match the complete indifference shown by the players – well looks of indifference anyway.

This is why I don’t follow soccer anymore. Too many unruly drunks and morons. Sports fans and spectators as a general rule are trash. We’ve seen too many drunken brawls amongst fans. Generally, it seems the Japanese are the only group of sports fans with something called dignity and respect. The rest are indeed just a bunch of animals.
