TEPCO’s Apology Commercial

In yesterday’s post about PSAs on Japanese TV, I forgot to mention that there is one company that has been paying to air commercials for the last few days. That company is Tokyo Electric (TEPCO), the folks behind the nuclear accident in Fukushima:

In the commercial, a voice reads an apology for the worry and trouble it has caused to the people of Fukushima and to Japan as a whole. The voice says that TEPCO will keep working hard to resolve the situation.

What matters most now are to prevent reactors from going any further belly up and to restore as much of the power generation as possible. Ads can wait.

The quickest way to alleviate some of the power shortage is probably to reinforce the power lines to be able to borrow more power from other parts of the Touhoku region as well as Hokkaido.

A bit more costlier way to borrow more power is to build more transformers so that eastern half of Japan that runs on 50 Hz AC power can use the 60 Hz AC power from the western half. The ones in existence are pretty much maxed out, so there’s no good way right now for the Kansai region to share more power even if they wanted to.
I’m guessing this is also a good opportunity to try to unify the frequency of AC power in Japan. Having two different frequencies in the same country is quite an absurd situation.

A permanent solution would likely come down to rebuilding new nuclear power plants. There’s just no current substitute that can produce that much power with the least amount of byproduct and cost. But this is going to obviously be met with tremendous political resistance, so who knows when it can happen.
Unless someone suddenly invents cheap nuclear fusion, I’m guessing most people will begrudgingly admit they do need electricity, and eventually relent on having a new plant built accompanied by improved safety standards and a gigantic NIMBY hullabaloo.

I’m sure alternative power soruces would be given more thought, but it doesn’t seem like it could advance quick enough to be able to power an advanced industral nation’s needs without horrible cost-performance issues.
But who knows … maybe if Japan can stand the decimation of its hot springs tourism industry, geothermal energy could be a viable alternative.

I see no reason Onagawa and Tokai shouldn’t start up eventually. It’s mostly a matter of how long it takes to do all the safety checks followed by the political climate of putting any of them back online?
In terms of building new nuclear plants — it should be noted that the 4 troublesome Fukushima reactors were among the first in Japan. #1 was built in 1967.
Onagawa’s #3 reactor (the only one online when the earthquake hit AFAIK) was built in 2002. Onagawa was a lot closer to the tsunami than Fukushima, and hasn’t had any issues.

Oh right … ok, I completely forgot about the other inactive and undamaged nuclear power plants in the region.
I guess trying to bring them back online would be the easiest technically and cheapest cost-wise. I would be in favor of reactivating them with the lack of any other realistic alternatives, so I’m hoping the nation isn’t gripped by nuclear-phobia too long.

that was disaster , I don’t want to blame tepco .
workers of tepko that try to solve the problem get pay 9000yen ~11000yen a day, really cheep

yep very obnoxious arguing about this..like reasons like it was too short notice (eh! – you wanted a warning??), there no system set up yet for me…what like you what your comfy chair positioned at the table before you will come! come your self and sort it out yourself…as you might have noticed things are bit busy…be useful even if you just stay in Tokyo..or dare I say it go to actually give a hand on the ground where its needed in the humanitarian disaster area. obnoxious and unhelpful indeed.

Might be just the choice of language but not sure Tepco are “behind the accident”. I think it was a large wave.

In that vein then isnt this an “American reactor” I heard or has their badge on it( so maybe why Americans are keen/relevant to help). [Oh not not that is it Japanese American made recal story again...]

You obviously don’t know how the Japanese advertisement industry works.

No one is advertising right now (自粛) and as such inventory is very available. Since Dentsu has a monopoly on most of this, it was probably given as a favor to a TEPCO upper management if not as a plea from the networks to fill the slots.
