A short video clip from ATV explains radiation safety procedures for people who live within 30 kilometers of the Fukushima nuclear plant:

Close your doors, windows, and turn off your air conditioning or heating unit. Hang your laundry indoors.
If you have to go outside, cover up your skin. Be sure to wear a hat, gloves, and a face mask. When you arrive at an evacuation center, get a radiation check to verify that you do not have contaminants on your clothing or body.

Other networks have been using similar cartoons to explain the situation to viewers. They stress that these measures will not become necessary in other parts of Japan, as the radiation risk only applies to the area near the nuclear plant.

Full protection from radiation exposure pretty much requires full body suits, from head to toe, which is overkill for most people not living next to ground zero; masks, regular radiation checks, and staying inside should suffice.

The major health risk will be seeing how much stuff like cesium is in the environment once this has settled down.

Yeah, this is about right. Very few people in Ukraine were actually directly affected by the radiation released during the actual events at Chernobyl aside from the crew.

However, once it made its way into the food chain, and once people, especially infants and pregnant women, ingested radioactive particles, that’s when the real problems began.

As an aside, I’m surprised “wash your hands and gargle” isn’t in the above video. Seems to be the solution to everything here.
