Ayumi Hamasaki Marries U.S.-Based Austrian Actor

A few days ago, news broke that pop star Ayumi Hamasaki had married Manuel Schwarz, an Austrian actor. It’s been a top story on the TV news broadcasts ever since, with the press following their every move:

Japanese pop singer Ayumi Hamasaki married U.S-based Austrian actor Manuel Schwarz on Saturday in a church ceremony in the United States, her office said Sunday.

Hamasaki, 32, and Schwarz, 30, met last August in Los Angeles when she made a promotional video for her song “Virgin Road,” in which he played her bridegroom, the office said earlier.

Schwarz lives in Los Angeles.

Although Schwarz is a U.S.-based actor, he doesn’t appear to be particularly famous. I could find no entry for his name on IMDB, and the clip reel he promotes through his YouTube Channel only contains a few generic scenes of him playing an attractive male:

Unless I’m mistaken, this guy looks familiar, as in the guy who starred in a sex tape with, I think, a previous Miss Japan and her friend, or a previous Miss ___ and her Japanese friend. I can’t quite recall.

I remembered Kevin’s first name, but i couldn’t remember his last. Anyways watched the music video of virgin road. It seems like that music video has very high production values. I mean I can’t think of the last time I saw an MV with helicoptors in it, but I don’t watch many asian MV.

The marriage could be an ‘arrangement of convenience’ sponsored by Hamasaki’s yakuza-linked/controlled talent agency, Avex, designed to get her a boost of positive coverage & publicity. If so, expect it to last a year or two tops.

Very similar to the arrangements made in 2005 between Kaoru Sugita (杉田かおる) and the alcoholic ne’er do well grandson of the Nissan founder Junta Ayukawa ( 鮎川純太); the novelty of the much-lauded union boosted Sugita into numerous TV dramas and talkshows for the duration of the short-lived marriage (under a year) and a little bit beyond. Each side what they wanted – Sugita, publicity and for Ayukawa, forgiveness of certain debts owed to organized crime creditors who arranged the whole deal from the start (for all his fame, he seemed to have squandered most of his fortune as the tabloids also revealed).

At first I thought “what an idiot to obey the commands of her management company and marry some flighty model.” But then it occurred to me that Madonna, one of the richest (and arguable smartest and most in control of their career) music artists on the planet did THE EXACT SAME THING here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Ward_%28U.S._actor%29) and here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Leon). The Leon guy she actually had a baby with.

So while it’s true that Ayu can’t sing worth a lick, and is likely controlled by her yak owned management company, her getting married to this euro trash dude is not necessarily a idiot move specific to her role as a talentless tarento j-pop robot.
