Travel Washlet – The Portable Japanese Toilet Experience

Do you love Japanese washlet toilets so much that you can’t imagine using a restroom without one? Have no fear, somebody invented a portable washlet that you can use to spray water on your behind at any time and in any place of your choosing!

Here is a clip from a FTV show that introduces some Japanese people and foreign tourists to the invention. A couple skeptical foreigners are asked to try it:

I’ll start off by saying this is beyond idiotic and a likely vector for disease transmission. I sincerely hope that they used a new device for each individual that tried it. Also, I hope that the folks on the street were handling an unused one. Simply disgusting.

I just love how CNNgo steals JapanProbe stories without giving credit, but then makes the error of not doing other research and finding out that this product is not “new” like it claims. I think I saw it several months ago (not that there is anything wrong at all with the reliable JapanProbe.com picking it up and posting that embarrassing video clip).

I Think its cleaner and better, and it involves BETTER HYGIENE!
In my opinion, just wiping after doing your business in the bathroom isn’t enough, you have to wash up throughly, then wipe.

so let me get it straight…
you think the newscasters wouldn’t clean it, or disinfect it.
what about the public bathrooms, that have these electronic devices, they wash many individuals bottoms.
If you say you don’t want to use it, and don’t want to clean up yourself more cleanly, and have stains between the two cheeks, its fine.
to you its “idiotic” to the other people it isnt.
Its useful for traveling,, camping, and places that dont have wash let toilets.

They tried this with me. I was staying at the Sakura Hostel in Asakusa on Nov 29 and 30. When I checked in to the hotel, Fuji TV was set up in the lobby. That scene in a room at the end where the people go in the bathroom was made there in the lobby. They asked me about this just like the others in the video. I thought I would have been on this video,but I’m glad the didnt use the tape they made with me. I’ve seen too much Japanese TV to know that they do little gags and tricks for comedy. I didn’t trust this product because I thought it was going to end up being something really embarrassing. On top of that, the hygiene issue. I’d be real concerned about disease getting spread around by different people handling it.
