well they certainly aren’t actors….. it would be interesting how well real japanese actors could actually pulll off a scene. These kids seem to hold back way too much.

…is this really the level of education in Japanese universities? If so, why are they ranked so highly internationally? I’m confused.

Japanese universities aren’t highly regarded or ranked highly internationally. In one recent poll, the best Japanese university (I think it was Todai) was ranked 24th in the world. The U.S., on the other hand, had 13 universities in the top 20.
