Video: Japanese Coast Guard Rescues Chinese Sailors

Some footage of the Japanese coast guard rescuing a few survivors from a ship that had sunk near Iriomote island:

Japan’s Coast Guard said on Friday it joined the rescue effort at the request of Taiwanese authorities after the Panama-registered cargo ship Nasco Diamond lost contact early on Wednesday on open seas, about 210 miles south of Japan’s southern island of Iriomote.

The survivors, all in their twenties, told Japanese authorities the ship capsized after sea water gushed into a storage area for unknown reasons, a coast guard official said.

The Coast Guard and their Taiwanese counterparts rescued five crew members, but two later died.

To be fair, Chinese embassy called Japanese Coast Guard to thank for investigating Chinese Sailors.

I think the proper English word for 捜索 in this case is “searching for” rather than “investigating”.

Quite right, and it’s termed ‘The Law of the Sea’. Leaders in the Vendee Globe solo around the world sailing race have been known to forfeit their chance of winning and head back upwind into the teeth of a storm to rescue an adversary. Far more honour in that than winning.

The Japanese Coast Guard is turning out to be the real heroes in the recent events.

There’s a memorable quote supposedly from an anonymous Japanese Coast Guard member.
Someone asked him what the difference between them and the Maritime Self Defense Force was. His answer was that in the event of an enemy attack from the sea, his job would be to be the first to respond and the first to die, and only then will the MSDF, (as a purely defensive force responding to an attack), be called into action.
