Man Throws Ball at Hiroshima Mayor

A couple days ago, Hiroshima mayor Tadatoshi Akiba threw a last ceremonial pitch at the old Hiroshima Municipal Stadium. Shortly after the pitch, a man opposed to the scheduled demolition of the stadium charged forward and threw a ball at the mayor:

The man was quickly subdued and arrested. The ball hit the mayor’s leg, but didn’t cause any serious injury.

How hypocritical. The mayor throws a ball straight at that baseball player and no-one criticises him, but when he gets a ball thrown at him? Dude’s getting arrested. That’s a major abuse of power right there.

This stadium had a special place of the people of Hiroshima. It was built with the help of it’s citizens in Hiroshima. That is why it was called Hiroshima Shimin Kyujyou. Shimin meaning the people of the city. When Hiroshima was in ashes right after WW2, the city had nothing and started to rebuild itself, this stadium would not have been built had it not been for the generous offer from the citizens. There used to be charity boxes through out the city where people could give in money in order to build this stadium. The Carp organization was then owned by the city of Hiroshima. There have been no other team in Japan where the relationship between the city and the team has been as close as the Carp. While they might be one of the smallest baseball teams in Japan, this is why I love the Carp. It sadden me that they are going to tear down this historic stadium which has meant so much for the people of Hiroshima.
