Australian Golfer Wayne Perske Caught With Cocaine in Japan

Pro golfer Wayne Perske has been arrested in Japan for cocaine possession:

Perske, 36, allegedly carried a packet containing 1.25 grams of cocaine in his pocket at a bar in Chiba prefecture (state), east of Tokyo, on Friday evening, a prefectural police official said on condition of anonymity citing official policy.

Perske told investigators that he intended to take the drug himself, the official said, adding that the golfer is still being interrogated. He did not give further details.

Under Japanese criminal procedures, police have 48 hours to interrogate before deciding whether to hand a suspect to prosecutors for further questioning. Prosecutors may detain a suspect for up to a total of 21 days before deciding whether to press charges.

Apparently Perske didn’t try very hard to hide the fact that he had the drugs, since a Japanese customer at the bar was able to spot the suspicious substance and called the cops.

That said, I might be a wee bit more concerned about folks saying they “bought drugs from a foreigner” if it was not, sadly, so often true. Sure, the guys controlling the flow into Japan are probably Japanese, but the runners on the street are very likely to be foreigners. When I used to go drinking in Osaka it was no secret that the Iranians wandering the streets were (unlike everyone else) not looking to pickup girls nor go clubbing – they were “working”.

Don’t say anything for 48hrs: all Japanese jurisprudence runs on confessions. Don’t confess squat, they do not know how to investigate.

No, murder, rape, robbery, assault – those are real crimes. Illegal drugs is a scam the government plays on it’s taxpayers to collect gobs of money and to justify their huge expense on cops, judges, jails, etc.

If it’s in the big book of law, it’s a real crime. You may disagree with the law but that doesn’t make the crime any less real.

I’d be more understanding of your stance if it was something like cannabis, but cocaine is a solidly hard drug. Not something that most people (even pro-cannabis legalization people) want legal or think as harmless as you do.

The problem with picking and choosing is who gets to decide. The government has already shown exceptionally poor choosing skills by allowing alcohol and tobacco (and cane sugar) but not any of the recreational drugs. If SAFETY was their main concern, they’d outlaw them all – but when CASH is their main concern, they’re choices make a lot more sense.
