I like Utada a lot(dissapointed to hear she’s taking a break from singing), though when I first heard this I couldn’t tell this was French until she said “mon amour”

I speak French, Japanese, and English. Whatever the hell that was I didn’t understand any of it. Just a terrible accent…

I actually don’t think she sounds *that* bad. She’s singing in an artistic way, not reading a book in school.
How many of the people who complained about her pronunciation are actually “francophone”?

BTW, French in Canada is quite different from French in France, n’est-ce pas?

That’s because she’s trying to sing like Edith Piaf. The problem is that Edith used to accentuate the “r”. So for a Japanese.. ^^

But she’s also an American and a native English speaker, so I’m not sure your ‘r’ for a Japanese thing works like you want it to.

I’m french. The accent is terrible at the beginning but she keeps improving and finally it’s very understandable.

It’s so annoying that Utada (and some other Japanese singers) tries to sing in other languages other than Japanese (like french, in this case and English in others). Yes, I know it’s all for the money. For example, her recent attempt at making it in the American music scene wasn’t much of a success. (ex. Baby Come back to me, etc) I know that Utada was born and raised in America so her English is good, but her singing in English isn’t good (it’s understandable, but not nearly as good as the American singers that sing in English). For pete’s sake, please just stick to singing in Japanese! (stick to what you’re good at!)(no offense to any die-hard Utada fans out there, I like Utada too =])

I always thought she sucked no matter what language she sung in. She’s pretty for sure – but she overpronounces and does weird tremolo/gargling things when singing, and when speaking she looks like she has a severe case of lockjaw. She’s the first person I’ve ever seen who laughs through clenched teeth.

The fact is that here, PEPSI NEX Advert always ask the artist to sing a foreign song (Perfume x Lovefool, Koda Kumi x Got To Be Real, L’Arc~en~Ciel x I Love Rock’n Roll, Porno Graffiti x Get it on, and so on), so she was just asked to choose a song she likes and she took this one.
