Japan Rejects Paris Hilton

Hats off to the immigration authorities at Narita Airport:

Paris Hilton canceled her Asia tour and returned home when she was denied entry at Tokyo’s airport Wednesday following a drug violation in the U.S. — running afoul of strict Japanese laws that have tripped up celebrities from Paul McCartney to Diego Maradona.

“I’m going back home, and I look forward to coming back to Japan in the future,” a smiling Hilton told reporters before departing on her private jet.

The 29-year-old celebrity socialite had arrived at Narita International Airport, outside the Japanese capital, two days after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor drug charge in Las Vegas. Japan has strict immigration laws that bar entry to those convicted of drug offenses, although exceptions are occasionally granted.

Given the fact that her conviction was so recent, it was probably unreasonable for her to expect Japanese authorities to allow her into this country.

I’m torn.

On the one hand, Japan’s fanatical fear of drugs (specifically, marijuana) strikes me as irrational and unduly severe.

On the other hand, I really really dislike Paris Hilton and her vapid self-perpetuating celebrity.

Can we assume they didn’t search her plane?
I have a feeling that a full search of her plane would
have turned up something, and we’d all be laughing at Paris in Japanese jail.

Private and charted planes do sometimes get searched when they land in a foreign country (usually if there’s suspicion).

They’re not protected by anything like the U.S. 4th Amendment.
Was her plane searched? I don’t know. But given the circumstances, I’d say the probability was high.

She’d be pretty stupid to assume the plane, even a private one, was a safe haven for contraband.

Ummm… did she just miss something here? I personally would have loved to have seen Japanese authorities throwing the book at her by searching her plane. Maybe time in Japanese prison would teach her a little respect… but I doubt it.

Wow, that was bitter. I just hate stupid celebrities, and how they’re still able to make money and “inspire” people.
