Is That Castle Burning?

Is that castle on fire? Nope! It’s just the hideous air pollution from a nearby smokestack:

An unsightly smokestack ruins one’s view of Kawanoe Castle in Ehime prefecture. Probably one of the most depressing things featured on the “Nanikore” show.

I’m sort of surprised this was a “How the illusion works” piece versus a “We shouldn’t pollute so much” piece.

Been thru this small city may times. It’s reason to be for most is the presence of a Large pulp/paper/tissue industry, not exactly one of the most “environmentally friendly” industries.

As do most similar pulp towns anywhere, the air is acrid. I met a young woman from there a few years back and I asked (not rudely) how it was living in such a… well…smelly situation.

She looked at me puzzled and said, “What Smell?”
