3D Camcorder

Panasonic will soon be selling a 3D digital camcorder:

On July 28th, Panasonic detailed the “world’s first 3D consumer camcorder[s],” the HDC-TM750 and HDC-TM650, in a series of press releases. The two products are fully functioning standard HD video cameras aimed at normal consumers in Japan, however consumers will be able to buy an attachable 3D conversion lens, the VW-CLT1.

The camera and lens set will cost about $2,000. The ATV news video clip states that you will need to buy a 3D television set if you want to view the fancy 3D images that the camcorder can record.

Very cool. I don’t think that everyone will “need” this to record their children’s birthday, but for the serious video artist, this will definitely open up new possibilities.

I just don’t see 3D in the current format taking off now, or ever. The hassle of either wearing special glasses or putting your eyes in just the right spot in front of a screen is just too much.
Until they invent a screen that can truly show 3D imagery to the naked eye from any angle, or basically invent holographic imagery visible in open air, I’m of the belief that 3D displays will never be more than just a neat gimmick. There may catch on for movies, but not for home electronics.

Recording it in 3D right on, got tired of the 2 dimensional deal, about time. We see our world in 3D, why can’t we record it in 3D..sorry we just don’t see and deal with a flat world lol.

Interest in 3D = 0. Just let this sad gimmick (attempt to get our wallets open) go away already.

If they can eliminate all of the crazy problems with 3D, such as eye strain and quick fatigue, it might stand a chance. As it sits now, it hurts my eyes(and apparently many other people’s too) just to watch something in 3D for a couple minutes.

I sat through Avatar in 3D and felt dizzy and sick afterward from the crazy perspective shift. I certainly don’t want that at home, not to mention it will mean you CANNOT watch your home videos in regular 2D since they’re actually recorded differently.

People here said nothing bad about Japan, they are just voicing their rightful concerns about the current stereoscopic 3D technology.

I’m worried that all this confusion of fake converted 3D with the ‘real’ 3D as demonstrated by Avatar/Pace fusion cameras will kill off 3D rather than let it evolve further. There’s a nice list at Cinematical (an article on Transformers 3 being filmed a lot with the stereoscopic cameras) of films that were filmed in 3D as opposed to converted, such as the upcoming Resident Evil — I’d watch more than one (Avatar) ‘real’ 3D movie before deciding 3D’s just a fad. If everyone who uses those Pace/Cameron cameras continues to overload the CGI and gimmicks the way it’s common with converted 3D, then I’ll join those calling for its early demise.
