Nagasaki Archive: Google Earth + A-bomb Information

A new site has been launched that combines Google Earth satellite images with information about the atomic bombing of Nagasaki:

The site, dubbed “Nagasaki Archive” (http://nagasaki.mapping.jp/), shows photographic portraits of A-bomb survivors and the locations of destroyed buildings on a 3-D map of Nagasaki, allowing users to view the victims’ A-bomb stories and photos of the buildings by clicking them.

“We want to save these tragic past experiences as accessible digital data and hand them down to future generations,” said a member of the site’s production committee.

Great idea, preserving the history of these events for future generations is absolutely necessary.
Now, let’s hope the same technology will be used to for preserve the exactions of Japan in China (Nanjing massacre, Unit 731,…)

They would be very welcome to, if they could come up with actual history based on hard evidence. And I’m sorry to say, magically derived death toll numbers which keep on getting larger as the years go by at the whim of the Communist party don’t count. I believe 300k was what they settled on for a while, but now I hear rhetoric saying “300k to 400k”…
I’d love to see those issues settled once and for all, but I do know that back around when relations were normalized with China, they bulldozed over most of the physical evidence in Nanjing for rebuilding and “building better relations with Japan”. It seems the USSR was a big enough threat that China wanted Japan on its side bad enough forfeit any formal financial reparations and gloss over any unresolved historical issues. It shouldn’t be entirely hindsight to say they should have seen the whole boondoggle with the ODA and historical “difference of opinions” in the years to come.
