Gopan Rice Bread Cooker

A video from Diginfo shows off the Gopan Rice Bread Cooker, a machine that transforms rice in to bread:

The GOPAN is basically used in the same way as regular bread making machines. First of all, 220g of washed rice, with water, salt, sugar, and shortening, is placed in the bread case. Next, gluten and dry yeast are placed in the automatic dispenser on top. Then, all you need to do is press the start button. A loaf of “rice bread” is ready in about four hours.

I can’t wait to try rice bread. But at nearly US$500 per machine,
it seem awfully expensive. (especially if it doesn’t tast good)

Instead of wheat, they use rice to make the bread…. cool.

Just out of curiosity, beer is also produced from wheat.
The Japanese food scientists should find of if they can
make beer out of rice.

  Since Japan has been poor in wheat harvest, typical Japanese beer is produced from malt and rice. It tastes different from traditional beers, lighter and more refreshing, but we Japanese love drinking it hot and humid summer.

    Beer produced from rice is not beer. You might call it ‘fake beer’
    To me it does not taste like beer at all. It’s cheap, because it is fake.

  Rice beer is common already, I live in Canada and I buy it quite often. It is usually a nice light beer. I’m pretty sure traditional asian beer is rice beer.

Just amasing. Only if the price isn’t that high for personaly use.

BTW, pan means bread in Japanese, therefore it’s “go bread”.
Also gopan sounds alike Gohan which means “rice meal” in Japanese.
Nice play on word.

Gopan — best product name ever! Works in two languages (well three if you count ‘pan’ as Portuguese)

  That’s where they got the word for bread from, actually. The Portuguese introduced a number of things to Japan, including 天麩羅 (tenpura) and Christianity lol

Should they make the thing cheaper it might be a real option to use this for me. Now I pay about $2.50 for a ‘normal’ loaf of bread in the store. In the Netherlands we can get 10 kg of rice for $20, which would make 45 rice-breads at approximately $0.45 for the rice + maybe again that much for the other ingredients.

Now the break even point would be at 312 breads, which is a bit too much, but should they lower the price to $250 for the machine that already becomes a lot better with 160 breads.

It takes 30minutes to cook rice but it’ll take 4 hours to make the loaf… Thats a lot of preparation time you have to consider every morning if you want fresh bread for breakfast…

  I’m sure the machine will have a timer that you can set, so that you can fill in the ingredients the night before and let the machine start at 3am so that you can enjoy freshly baked rice bread when you wake up.

  In Japan and other Asian countries automatic rice cookers are present in virtually every home. They have timers which let you choose the time the rice should be ready. You put the rice in the cooker the night before and/or in the morning for the lunch or evening meal. The automatic bread machines which have gained so much popularity that it threatens the businesses of bakers, of course have timers too which allows for very flexible baking timing.

I see recipe contains gluten which is no good for people with wheat intolerance. Rice is gluten free.
