Cat Wounded by Air Gun

NTV’s evening news broadcast today had a story about a wounded cat in Ishikawa prefecture:

The cat’s owner noticed that the cat seemed in pain and took her to a Vet. The Vet found a 7.5mm air gun pellet in the cat’s chest. Although the cat had suffered a broken rib and a punctured lung, she is okay now after having undergone medical treatment.

Police are trying to figure out who shot the cat, who -if caught- will likely be charged with violations of firearms and animal protection laws.

I’ve never heard of a 7.5mm air gun.

Guns are very tightly controlled in Japan so it will be simple for the police to find the culprit.

Unless it is an illegally held weapon, of course.

There are cats that get hurt/killed all the time…how is this newsworthy? Because it’s an airgun? Admittedly I don’t know what the ‘firearms’ laws are.

The cat was probably being a pest and going through someone’s garbage so they popped off a BB at it. The owner should have kept better track of their pet.

If it was intentionally malicious that’s a shame, but it’s hardly worth putting on the TV news.

The firearms laws are very strict in Japan, that is why this item is newsworthy.

It’s not a firearm though, at least by any other country’s classification.

It’s an air gun. It uses a pump or gas canister to propel an object and is generally regulated in the same line as an airsoft gun.

Correct it is not a firearm… But neither is your fist but carries the same recourse if used forcibly against you or your property… This includes animals…

In the UK an airgun with a sufficiently high muzzle energy is classed as a firearm.

The Austrian army used an air rifle as a military weapon in the Napoleonic period.

Air guns are controlled under Japanese law the same as bang bang type weapons.

Air soft guns escape the law because of their very low muzzle energy.

Actually, this is just a local law from where I am, NSW Australia, although I’m sure many other countries/states may have similar laws.
It states that replica or imitation firearms are classified as prohibited firearms, and is illegal to posses without a permit. This ofcourse includes airsoft.

Wow… Your disregard towards animals is astounding… Maybe because fighting and murder happens “all the time” it shouldn’t be considered news worthy??? Well, if the culprit would have eaten it afterward then there really wouldn’t have been a problem.
If you shoot a cow you’re a criminal, if you eat a cow your at Mcdonalds.
Stupid to say that ownership and the changing of money between hands can dictate the importance of an animal’s life, no matter what its I.Q is.

If a cats going through your garbage then cover it up better.You dont have the right to shoot it!!
I have loads of stray cats fighting and carrying on in my neighbourhood and i wouldn’t change it for the world.

P.S. only two weeks till the cicada get here.

It’s illegal to shoot a stray cat with an airgun but it’s ok to harpoon whales? They are both mammals, experience fear, feel pain, develop affective relationships with their young, etc.

Would it be legal to harpoon the cat?

What I don’t understand is that they round up hundreds of strays a day in this city, and kill them in the name of overpopulation. But if you take a shot at one with a toy pistol it’s illegal? Seems dumb as hell to me.

It’s illegal because it’s not a “stray” cat as it has an owner… So let’s put it another way… Because you feel this way what if I say shot at your TV with a “toy gun” and break it… Would you not want due process to carry against me??? Ever been to Rome? Thousands of stray cats there, roaming the streets. THOUSANDS. And they piss and shit everywhere. They’re as bad as pigeons. They claim all over the monuments and ruins and make their homes there too.

This cat was obviously somebody’s pet.

Whales are wild. Some are protected and rightfully so, some aren’t because they’re not endangered. As long as any animal ain’t the last one of its kind, it’s OK by me. And for you to bring up whales in this means you are a damned racist.
(It can’t be any worse than how the White man went to Australia and tried to institute the “Breeding out of aboriginal traits” programme of miscegenation, by making the Aboriginals disappear by breeding them out with white traits – see the film “Rabbit Proof Fence”)

This is obviously not the forum for posting satirical commentary or pointing out the irony of how so many weep over a cat shot with an air-gun but will also defend the killing of whales by harpooning.

” .. the White man went to Australia … etc. …” That’s an interesting new topic.

If the cat was ‘obviously’ somebody’s pet, then the owner should have taken more care of it.

A stray cat? … one that strays.
