Court Tells Right Wing Protesters to Stay Away From Theater

The Yokohama District Court　has dealt a major blow to right-wingers who were using loudspeakers and sound trucks to protest a theater that was going to screen “The Cove”:

The court decision on the injunction Thursday prohibits making loud speeches within a 100-meter radius of the movie theater and entering the movie theater without permission, the distributor Unplugged Inc. said.

As the movie theater is planning to screen the film from July 3, scores of people from the Tokyo group staged street protests around the theater on June 12. The theater applied to the court for an injunction to ban such protests.

The next court decision that Japan really needs: a ban on incredibly election sound trucks.

No, no, no. You don’t get how this game is played. If the New York Times notices this at all it will be in the context of a story that outlines how freedom of speech in Japan is being restricted because protesters aren’t allowed to voice their opinions.

The civil and likely most effective thing to do until the law is changed, is to go up to the candidates directly ask them if they have a minute or call their office, and tell them in a calm and composed matter that you found their noise polluting methods to be unpleasant and have been significantly discouraged from, or outright will not be voting for them.

The real question is, does the court have any way to compel them to comply? As I understand it, Japanese courts don’t have the ability to find someone in contempt, so they have no way to back up their civil decisions if the defendant doesn’t want to play ball.

The right-wingers have an instinctive respect for the authority of the courts and will naturally obey their rulings.

If the right wingers show up, the theater can call the cops and wave the court order in their faces. The cops are obliged to uphold injunctions and restraining orders. Or for that matter, since in order to hold a demonstration a group is supposed to get a permit from the cops, the cops just won’t issue the permit. If they try to hold the demonstration anyway, now the cops got them for two things: violating an injunction and holding a demonstration without a permit.

There is a post on F’ed Gaijin.com (see the links on Japan Probe) where this group not only visited the theater to protest the ruling but they actually visited the owner’s house to deliver a letter of disapproval and protest outside his house. They argued with the owner’s young son and apparently made his mother cry as they mention in in one of videos. They call the cops eventually, but not before being seriously harassed.

Thank you Yokohama District Court for some rationality on an a particularly disturbing issue for many of us.

There already are enough bullies in life without having to put up with this mangy mob.

All have the right to protest peacefully and calmly – please do so.

We are in a free world I would think, they have the right to do this stuff as long as its within the law that’s all.

They have the right to protest, they just can’t disrupt the operations of the theater in the process. It seems like a reasonable compromise honestly.
