I saw that! Believe me, that is bad too. Yea, the girls performed well, and the overall intentions were good, but I’m sure there were some pedophiles hiding in the woodworks. This becomes a very gray area. When is it ok for little girls to perform and people looking at it for the artistic value of it, rather than viewing it from a lolita, sexually perverted perspective? And why is it that we can have standards for young girls, but no one says Jack about little boys when they model around or pose like these girls. All I’m saying is ALL kids need to be protected-boys or girls.
Would I let my child participate in a beauty pageant or dancing pageant, depends on how the show is portrayed? Is it sleazy or classy?
it just all depends. My little girl is a dancer (ballet) and she has quite tasteful performances. I’m very proud of her, if she had to wear skimpy clad clothes, I probably would object. But if it is done in a respectful, dignified way, I don’t see a problem with it. I draw the line when they start looking like mini versions of Miss America, lipstick, high heels, etc., that’s where I draw the line.
But this segment was really weird and seriously creepy, focusing on their butts and the whole camera angle, soft lens close ups, made me really queasy and how the segment was conducted was vile to me, to say the least. This is something you wouldn’t see on TV like this in most countries.

Ah yes, the age old “Japan has an obsession with little girls” problem. Because that’s what we’re really talking about in this article: Japan’s rampant pedophilia, not a show about beautiful girls.

In reality, most Japanese people are level-headed, normal people like the rest of us. They’re interested in protecting their children from individuals who would mean them harm. Plenty I have spoken with are also knowledgeable about Japan’s child modeling etc, and have said they wouldn’t want their children involved.

The difference I have seen is that they can watch a show like this and think of it objectively, as in “Wow, those are really beautiful girls; I can’t believe they’re only elementary school aged!”, without hijacking the topic and talking about pedophilia, and how there should be a moralistic crusade to eradicate this plague on society.

Contention 1)
Of course all kids need adequate protection (both physical, and legal). But it’s a two way street, and even Western societies don’t have a perfect balance. Kids should be protected, but they shouldn’t be overprotected and risk becoming sheltered, unable to live a normal, social life. And criminals should be prosecuted, but discretion should also be exercised so as not to end up with an entire nation of 18 year old “pedophiles”, forever labeled as “sex offenders” on account of having consensual relations with their 17 year old partner.

Japan is not a perfect country (nor is any other country, really). Politicians will probably enjoy this type of news, if only to build up mass hysteria about the rampant pedophilia, to continue piling laws on top of laws to (over)protect children and (over)prosecute criminals.

I’m not saying it’s wrong to identify certain problems in society and suggest remedies, but try to be reasonable. Is it really so wrong to look at a child and think that he/she is particularly beautiful, as in this program? Or have we been beaten with morality so much that it is no longer acceptable to think anything about anyone else’s child?

Contention 2)
The girls in this program, as mentioned elsewhere, are actually models working for various teen fashion magazines, and as such have consented to and are used to having attention paid to their appearance. That in itself is another entire debate (whether children should be allowed into modeling), suffice it to say that from the perspective of many parents, being “ogled” by a few perverts is a minor tradeoff for a big opportunity at a modeling career, instead of what would otherwise be a dead-end life of sub-par education, crap part-time work at konbini, and sexist job as an OL.

These things are far too complex for simple, one-line moralist perspectives!

Ponta, I didn’t see the video focusing on the kids butts either. And no watching ballet is not creepy. These kids are just dancing, I don’t see them as attempting to make themselves sexually desirable. They are not gyrating around nearly naked to a song about getting a man. I’m sure you noticed the difference before you even posted it right? And yes American beauty pageants with 6 year old girls dressed like fashion models are disturbing too. Actually in my opinion I find all beauty pageants degrading to women, but at least an adult is able to make a decision to exploit herself.

Doesn’t stuff like this always boil down to one question though. That question being “is it ok to have sexual desires towards children even though I don’t act on them?” In my opinion that is what supporters of this type of programming are saying. The kids are presented in a way that suggests they are beautiful women that you should desire. I do realize that there are far worse things out there but to be honest what audience can this possibly be targeted at other than pedophiles? I do find it disturbing that stuff like this gets on TV somehow. Yes there are horrible things all over the world, if you like you can go ahead and make a list of them. I’m simply responding to the topic here about this one television segment.

A girl might try to look like a pretty singer who happens to look sexy in adult eye, but that does not make the girl look sexy just as a boy does not look prestigious but just looks cute when he tries to look like a cool actor he likes.

Some parents complain that kids should wear the clothes proper to their age. I understand it to some extent.In the past, children used to wear conservative clothes. Still some parents frown on the children if they don’t wear conservative clothes ;others approve of it. I don’t think the girl above are trying to make themselves sexually desirable nor do I think their parents and the TV producer are trying to make them look sexually desirable.

Almost anything can be an object of sexual desire for a pervert.
A girl in miniskirt might turn him on.
The girls above might turn him on.
The children dancers above might turn him on.
An old lady might turn him on.

dude it was just collages of girls underage taken on the streets with a bar over their eyes and what not. I wouldnt make this stuff up man. Its not technically child porn so they cant bust anyone for it. Law seems to be the same.

And why is that? I hope you also realize a big portion as to why rape is low in Japan is because a lot of it is NOT reported, so there are inaccuracies in that report. So while it is true that in Japan rape is lower than in many countries, statistically overall it is much higher than you probably might think.

I’ve never claimed that statistics reflects the substance, but I think Japan is much safer in this regard.

I’d love to see a link to that story. If there are ten unsuccessful abductions reported each week then how many successful ones are there? I actually spent some time trying to google this but thanks to Japanese parental abductions and North Korea I found it impossible to get any information on kidnappings in Japan that did not involve one of those two topics.

Carlos, Japan as a sovereign nation is entitled to it’s sex culture, and if you don’t like it you are free to leave the country.

Also, I should note that it was not until 2003 with the supreme court case of Lawrence v Texas that the supreme court ordered all ‘sodomy’ laws unconstitutional in the United States. Even though sodomy laws are now illegal, people once convicted for being homosexual prior to 2003 are still forced to register as sex offenders. In my state of Georgia, there are over 100 people who must register as sex offenders because they are guilty of being LGBT.

In my state of Georgia, sex offender registries are so abused that people convicted of dissent toward the government can be added for the sex offender registry without even having had to have committed a crime.

The photograph in which a child pose in a swimsuits might be innocent and harmless but it is wrong to sell it in a porno shop.

And as a average citizen, you’ll never visit such a shop and find such a magazine unless you search for it just as as a average American citizen, you would rarely encounter such a shop unless you searched for the shop.

Let me ask you, with the strict laws and conservative female outlooks on the street in your opinion, why there are more sex offender in U.S? and why do you think Japan has more problems that the U.S.?

What I don’t like about your comments is not your opinion about child’s clothes and make-up—I can understand some parents don’t like it—but your biased comparison between Japan and the U.S.

You visit U.S. and you find some kinky shop selling kinky staff, and this is the U.S. this is rampant, this is rape rate despite the laws and this is statistics about pedophilia on the internet and this is the U.S.A. No other countries are like that. Something is seriously wrong with it. Do you like that?
