Paul Watson Responds to Japanese Arrest Warrant (and Publicly Admits His Guilt)

In case you were wondering how Sea Shepherd leader Paul Watson would respond to the news that Japan had issued a warrant for his arrest, here is a clip of him being interviewed by NTV:

One of the crimes that he is said to be charged with is “obstruction of business,” and Watson makes not attempt to deny that he is guilty of that. Watson freely admits that he and his organization work to obstruct Japanese whaling. Because he personally thinks that Japanese whaling is “illegal,” he feels he has the right to commit violent and illegal acts against Japanese whalers.

Nice objective reporting.

Let me fix that last sentence for you:

They might as well be charging him with ‘Pissing Off a Japanese Citizen’ since that’s essentially all he does. Given Japan’s litigious history, I’m surprised that’s not somehow a crime already.

The US or another country needs to outright outlaw whaling and/or hunting dolphins. Then these crazy treehuggers can go flag their ship over there and have a legal leg to stand on confronting the Japanese. Japan will just continue to back the ICR idiots no matter how corrupt, violent, or blatantly untruthful they are, and Sea Shepherd will be seen more and more as extremists just because they don’t have the power of a whole country to back them.

I’d love to see Japan take some global and national responsibility and say “Ok, our bad, we won’t whale in that sanctuary anymore.” Or even “Ok, we’ll only take 300 whales this year, we don’t really NEED 900+”.

You can state it however you like, but it still amounts to one person engaging in violent and illegal acts because he has personally determined that the actions of the Japanese whalers to be illegal.

The US or another country needs to outright outlaw whaling and/or hunting dolphins.

I’m pretty sure that there are already American laws against whaling and dolphin hunting. The sale of dolphin and whale meat is certainly outlawed in America, as we can see from the case of the sushi chef who recently got arrested for serving up whale meat.

The United States can make a law against whatever it wants, but those laws are only valid in U.S. territory. They would offer no protection to animal rights activists who obstruct the activities of other nations’ ships in international waters. Flagging one’s ship as American does not give one the right to act as a global police force, enforcing American laws in foreign countries.

I’d love to see Japan take some global and national responsibility and say “Ok, our bad, we won’t whale in that sanctuary anymore.”

I think Japan would lean towards such a position if the country that unilaterally proclaimed that “sanctuary” actually demonstrated that they hold some sovereignty over the area in question. Few countries recognize Australia’s outlandish claims to vast stretches of ocean.

It has nothing to do with his interpretation of the situation. The Japanese interpretation of his actions as ‘terrorism’ is just as subjective as his interpretation of the Japanese whaling as illegal. It is pretty clear by Australian policies and international moratoriums that what they are doing is wrong. Almost every environmental agency agrees, though many decry his methods.

I think it’s pretty understandable that Australia can’t front the man-hours and ships to go police this place they established, but that shouldn’t mean it doesn’t apply. I think the Australians should just flag the Steve Irwin and say that they’re enforcing Australia’s sanctuary. I don’t see how sending a different boat to do the same thing makes it different.

For the record, most of the ‘vast stretches of ocean’ which Australia lays claim to is surrounding the Great Barrier Reef, which is technically part of the Australian land mass and a natural wonder, so I think it’s very well justified.

You’ll note that the anti-whalers are not being charged with terrorism. They are being charged with very specific illegal acts, acts they admit to (and there is also film to prove it).

Many people may think that Japanese whaling is “wrong.” Unfortunately for them, Japan’s lethal research whaling program is not illegal. If they truly wanted to stop it, they should change international laws to remove the so-called “loophole” that allows Japan to legally kill whales and consume whale meat from research hunts.

Australia’s inaction has nothing to do with limited man hours and ships. Their politicians may talk big about protecting whales, but they simply don’t want to commit to using their coast guard or military to enforce their claims over certain stretches of antarctic ocean.

Australia is quite capable of tracking ships on the high seas. Unlike Sea Shepherd, they have a modern high tech navy and coast guard. If they wanted to enforce their territorial claim, they could easily do it. Their decision not to is a political one.

Last time I checked, the Japanese whaling program takes place around Antarctica. Australia’s very dubious territorial claim has to do in this case with Antarctica, not the Great Barrier Reef.

The acts were committed in international waters on and against Japanese vessels. In situations like this the laws of the country where the vessel is registered apply. When Bethune illegally boarded a Japanese vessel, he put himself on Japanese territory and under Japanese legal jurisdiction. If it can be shown that Watson ordered him to commit those acts, then Watson is culpable under Japanese law even if he never entered Japan or boarded a Japanese vessel. This is standard international practice in any case where a crime has been committed in a country’s territory under the direction of, or with the assistance of, a group based outside that country’s territory.

What Watson and Sea Shepherd did, by flinging their vessels and throwing projectiles and acid-containing canisters is TERRORISM. It’s not just simply “disrupting business,” that’s just the Japanese being polite, using polite language. What Watson and his crew do, is downright violent, the equivalent sort of thing being if I decided to drive my car into my neighbor’s house while they were making a racket to shut them up.

2: I live 5 minutes from the ocean. I go there all the time. I have sailed (sometimes for weeks without sighting land) all over the US and European costal waters, and beyond. I have been SCUBA certified for 16 years now, and have swam in the ocean with MANY types of animals, from dolphins to whales to sharks, all over the planet. I go survival camping for fun, and I am a very nature-oriented guy, despite still being able to hold down a high-end computer job. I am a very well-versed musician on several common instruments, I compose and remix a lot of music, and I speak three languages.

I may not be ‘The Most Interesting Man in the World’, but if there is someone on the internet who you decide to take seriously, I would consider myself a good candidate.

I assume in your analogy you claim the Japanese fishermen are guilty of this. I’m fairly sure however that the whales they catch are not on the endangered list. Also I think the level of intelligence whales exhibit is subjective. I admit they have a means of simple communication but that’s not even close to a unique trait in mammals. I’ve seen dogs or even cats that seem smarter than whales.

You sound like a person who has a great affection for animals and nature. I can understand that, but at the same time I don’t think there is anything wrong with eating meat. Personally I really don’t care either way if the world decides to make whaling legal or illegal. I just believe that whatever the laws are people need to follow them or do what they can to legally change it.

I don’t want to attempt to insult you and I think James answered most of your points quite well. I feel you may be very aware of the propaganda put forth by the anti-whaling community but less informed regarding actual laws and facts on the topic. I would encourage you to do more research on both sides of the argument. Also being against whaling does not mean that you have to also side with people who are clearly breaking the law. I really think this is an issue that can be resolved without violence and through legal means.

I find that statement a little confusing. In comparison to other parts of the world (namely the US) the Japanese are not a litigious people at all. But beyond that it’s not like these guys are just “pissing off Japanese citizens”. They engage in reckless activities that have a serious risk of harming or killing human beings. Piloting there ships along side other vessels or parking themselves in ships paths. It’s only a matter of time before someone is hurt. Even throwing things at the other ships is dangerous. Do a google search on people killed by being hit with a beer bottle. It may seem like a harmless prank but it puts lives in danger. The point is if these activities took place on any street in most places of the world the “pirates” would be arrested on the spot. Personally I’d love to see some protection in place for the fishermen. We have navies mobilizing to counter pirates near Africa. Why can’t we get a little help with these pirates?

Anyway my point is I understand if you are sympathetic to whales but I think it’s a big mistake to ignore the crimes these guys are getting away with. If the Japanese whalers were actually breaking the law don’t you think something would be done? We do not have to rely on vigilante drama queens for justice in this day and age.

I fully believe Watson and his crew are justified in interrupting the Japanese whaling. I agree with some(not all) of their methods. The Japanese are outright ignoring requests, pleas, and demands by significant global powers to cease and desist their activities in that area, so I believe they have impunity to disable the ships and make their crew uncomfortable. Butyric acid is not toxic or harmful, but it smells really effin’ bad. I see no harm in that. I don’t agree with them playing ramming games which endanger their crews lives.

I guess what it boils down to is the fishermen are not breaking any laws. The Sea Sheppard not only break laws but do it proudly. I truly believe the massive amount of money they have poured into saving perhaps a small amount of whales would have been better spent through legal channels.

I don’t know if our opinions differ on what the laws are or if it’s ok to break them. Personally I don’t see anything Sea Sheppard does as ok. Simply being in such close range of other ships is foolish and reckless. Saving the whales is fine if it can be accomplished legally.

You are condoning violence for violence sake, to stop somebody from doing something by using violence. Sea Shepherd could also resort to lawful ways of interruption, instead of resorting to physical violence. They could go to the International Court of Arbitration and formally make a request to halt and RE-EXAMINE all whaling activities in the areas of which they believe the laws are being broken. But they choose to resort to violence and terrorism, and causing major damage, not just to the Japanese ships, but their own, as well as the crews on both sides.

IT IS! That is what happened, FINALLY. The Japanese have finally said, enough is enough, lets stop these guys from doing further damage to the Japanese vessels and crews, as well as the Sea Shepherd crews themselves! The Japanese have approached Interpol and the international courts to obtain this arrest warrant, as a first step to see Sea Shepherd would stop their violent, damaging, and damning activities. Something is finally being done, as you might say. Up to now, the Japanese vessels had been watching and tolerating the violent conduct of Watson’s crew. They recorded everything that happened, each and every time, when and where, and how, on videotape as well as personal testimonials, and finally had to resort to going to Interpol, via their international lawyers.

The flag, while supposedly representing a tragic war and racism, is still a major part of the state flag of Mississippi and was until 2001 part of the state flag of Georgia. The flag is still flown on the lawn of the South Carolina state courthouse after a law moved it from the top of the building.

The ‘Confederate Flag’, also known as the ‘Second Confederate Naval Jack’, really got a bad rap from the civil war. It was considered a general symbol of the south, and was adopted as a symbol by South Carolina and the Confederacy because SC was the first state to secede during the Civil War. That particular flag was never an official banner of the Confederate army, though it was a part of many of their battle flags. It was common to see the flag flown throughout WWII, especially in the pacific, by navy servicemen either from the south or with southern-named squads.

I have no idea why Canadian Watson is flying it.

It is not a loophole, Karisu, not when the rules say “Any whales killed for research must be utilized”. If a rule or law says “One cannot do A, unless they also do B”, and one does both A and B, then B is not a “loophole”.

A “loophole” would be if IWC rules said “A country cannot whale commercially under any circumstances” but said nothing at all about research whaling. If Japan then killed whales with the excuse “But this is for research, and there is no rule that says we cannot kill whales for research” then that would be exploiting a loophole – nothing in this situation says Japan can kill whales for research, but then again nothing says they cannot.

IWC rules say:
-A member country cannot whale commercially.
-A member country can conduct whaling in the name of research, if they have IWC approval to do so.
-If a member country conducts whaling in the name of research, they must utilize (eat) the whales culled.

Japan is not whaling commercially, it is whaling for research with IWC approval and to quotas approved by the IWC, and they are abiding by IWC rules regarding what they are obligated to do with the whales they cull. There is no “loophole”. How is that hard to understand?

…and even if it were a sham, the IWC is in control of who is allowed to whale and who is not. They could certainly deny Japan’s request as easily as they permit it. Certainly that right doesn’t belong to a terrorist group.

Most wildlife folks I know, from hunters, fishermen, and even including agents for the department, talk repeatedly about the necessity to monitor the numbers of wild animals. I am certain that the Japanese documentation provides the IWC with an idea of the numbers of these whales that are out there, their migration patterns, their sustainability from year to year and other valuable information necessary for managing a species. This data would cost the IWC greatly to retrieve if it weren’t being done by the Japanese. Do you think Mr. Watson would like to lend his vessels for a research project and actually help out with the mundane task of managing the whales? No cameras there. No US TV show rights.

So it’s a different culture. Who can judge so quickly and so easily? It’d be just as easy to look at fat old Mr. Watson and judge him for his fast food diet and his cooler full of soda pop. He might try eating a bit of whale from time to time to slim down a bit.

Quite a lot, actually. I’ve eaten cod, lobster, crab, scallops, several types of shrimp, sole, salmon, pickerel, perch.. the list is actually quite long.

Research catches are accepted as a normal part of marine resource management programs. The difference is that when NZ opens a research catch for lobster, research doesn’t get “this treatment”, and no one ever demands to know why they’ve not found a way for lobsters to cure cancer yet.

How can they charge him with “obstruction of business” when Japanese whaling is for research purposes only? If they were to find him guilty of that, then they are admitting that it is indeed commercial and not research whaling.

Can’t have it both ways. If the whalers are not under anyone’s jurisdiction in international waters, then neither is he and he is free to act like an ass all he wants. On the other hand, if the law applies to him, then it applies to the whalers too, and then they are both doing something wrong.

It is so broad it is meaningless. Anyone could be convicted of this crime at nearly any time. If you are walking down the sidewalk while someone is sweeping it, you are ‘guilty’ of this crime. It is absurd.

He is also charged with assault, so the full charge would be assaulting Japanese citizens and pissing them off. I’m sure if he ever actually got arrested there could be plenty of other charges added to that.

Japan is being excessive with its fishing, come on they are depleting the Blue Fin tuna and do not realize the consequences of removing such species from the oceans. They will finish with the Tuna and move into another species, and then the rest of the world is supposed to stay there just watching???? Most of the bluefin tuna catch is purchased by Japan, but it is not caught by Japan. The rest of the world is not “just watching”, many of the world’s other countries are the ones catching the fish and selling them. If anyone is being excessive with fishing bluefin, and I tend to agree that they are, it is not Japan.

I haven’t followed this too closely, and this guy Watson may seem like the Malcolm X of whale’s rights, but I’m not too concerned about the opinion of a government when deciding when something is right or wrong, are you? A lot of cool things are illegal before society advances to the point where laws are changed. And governments are usually the last to hear the news.

I don’t know everything Watson has done, but basically, I’m glad someone is actually out there making an attempt to save these poor, wonderful creatures. I’d like to adopt one so it can have the same right to live as my house pet here at home.

I think your simple little analogy needs some correcting.

You and I are neighbors. One hundred years ago, we both killed stray dogs – you to harvest the oil from their bodies, I to eat their meat. Hunting and killing stray dogs for meat was never hugely popular in my household, but during the late 1940′s and 50′s, you heavily encouraged my household to kill stray dogs. You eventually found other sources of oil, and stopped your own stray dog killing.

After some decades of this, it is determined that stray dogs are in danger of being wiped out. An international moratorium on large scale commercial stray dog hunting is created. However, recognizing that my household still wants to eat some whale meat, you allow me to engage in very small scale lethal research programs. The agreement clearly states that catches from research hunts can be sold and consumed.

Suddenly, you and your friends decided that stray dogs are special. Without any conclusive studies to prove so, you begin to state that dogs are highly intelligent, possibly even more intelligent than humans. You claim, without any credible proof, that my tiny scale hunts of stray dogs are “wiping them out” or “driving them to extinction.” While butchering other types of animals for meat in your own country, you scream about how “barbarous” and “cruel” it is for me to hunt stray dogs. Although I don’t particularly like when someone tries to twist my words or to put words in my mouth, in your case I will make an exception. You can cry and scream that “we” are getting all emotional about it all you want. Fact is, they whales belong to everyone, like it or not.

Personally, I’m not all that concerned about the whales. The particular whales the Japanese hunt probably aren’t the smartest of the bunch. Nor are they endangered. But the bottom line is, the Japanese are not taking the whales from the waters near Japan, they have to travel a considerable distance into waters that belong to everyone. So if some jerkoff wants to go there and mess with them, I really don’t care about that either.

As I said before, either the ocean is no-man’s-land and the whalers are free to hunt there, but then Watson is free to do whatever the hell he likes in no-man’s-land too. Or the whalers have to abide by international rules, and then Watson should also have to abide by international rules and behave in a more civilized manner. You can’t have it both ways.

But this crap about the Japanese not having to respect the interests of other countries, but then turn right around and get all whiny when someone doesn’t respect the interest of their country is total B.S.

We can go back and forth about this indefinitely, but the bottom line is Japan as a whole is taking the wrap just to preserve the interests of a few whalers, who’s contribution economically to the country is miniscule, and who provide a product that they don’t even need. The bad PR that Japan is receiving over this is simply not worth it. Now if you disagree with me on THAT fact, then we have certainly reached an impasse in our conversation.

Mr. Watson operates under the rules of free speech and demonstration. He feels that what the whalers are doing IS against the rules. He thinks that the whalers are doing it for commercial purposes, and the large numbers of whales is his evidence. So he is demonstrating against them in a way that gets a lot of attention.

Clearly, by the amount of conversation on this issue, his method is working.

In the English language, sometimes the term “feel” is used synonymously with the term “think”, just in a more broad sense. Just as it is used synonymously with terms like “opinion” and several other terms. So I wouldn’t get too bogged down in the exact terminology I used, in everyday use, it can be read a few different ways, but the average person would understand the implied meaning.

There is absolutely no question whatsoever that Mr. Watson has done more research on this topic than either you or I have.

I for one have never said I admire Mr. Watson, or look up to him. I’m fairly indifferent to what he does, just as I am fairly indifferent to what the whalers do. I think they are both more wrong than they are right, in probably about equal measure.

I’d be willing to bet that Mr. Watson doesn’t care if you think of him like a 5 year old. The fact that he got you thinking about this topic is his goal, and he clearly has achieved it.

OK, let me type it slowly so that you *can* understand.

Whale is served at the local elementary school for the *required* school lunch once a year. That’s it. Only once a year. My youngest son was ill on that day of his second year at the elementary school, so he had already experienced the whale meatballs and he was looking forward to having them again–a special treat. Think about the turkey feast you have perhaps once a year or something similar and you’ll get the idea. Would you want to be ill on that day?

You know, a little trip over to Japan would do you a world of good. Not only would it broaden your life experience, but it would help you see beyond your own culture. Actually, there are restaurants that specialize in whale. And it is available in grocery stores. I’ve seen both of these things with my own eyes, so don’t try to tell me this is not true. Plus it is available canned, year round. It might take a little more effort to obtain it if you live in a remote area, but it can still be obtained. If your sons love whale, you can definitely get it.

If you’ve lived in Japan as you say you have, then you know that cuisine varies from prefecture to prefecture. It is quite possible that where you lived you saw whale and whale restaurants. I have no doubt of this. Where I live, in Osaka, it is a different story. Canned whale? Our local Heiwado doesn’t carry it. That doesn’t mean it’s not available in Japan, but that it’s commonly available. Remember my point? My point was simply that my kids look forward to the whale meatballs every year and this has made me think about whale hunting more than Mr. Watson.

A few posts back, you stated that Mr. Watson would be happy just have me think about the issue. I responded that my kids loving to eat whale has made me think about the issue more than he did. Yet you somehow continue to believe that a man like Mr. Watson can make me think about an issue that otherwise doesn’t affect me personally. No, indeed, it is because my children love whale that I think about this issue at all.

However, you are dead wrong. Mr. Watson does NOT want people to THINK about the issue at all. He wants people to FEEL about it. If people would do their homework and look at the facts then he would have fewer supporters.

If his supporters would take the time to look at the IWC website, to learn what kind of whales are being harvested, to understand which whales are threatened or endangered and which are not, it would go a long way in this dispute.But they don’t. They rely upon an argument based on emotion: whales are big, whales are mammals, whales are intelligent, whales are….

For animals that are smart, have developed brains and personalities, there’s not much difference between them and us. They are at our mercy, but we should be kind to animals and try to preserve nature as much as possible.

That’s why I want to adopt one. My dogs that live in my neighborhood and play in the park every day are not endangered either, but I can’t hunt them when I’m hungry. They have owners (guardians) who would object, and I would like to speak up for these whales and defend them also. They are amazing and have value that lower animals like chickens don’t. Let’s keep the eating to animals we can sustainably domesticate and farm in a healthy way. We are advanced enough now that we don’t have to eat anything that moves!

I don’t believe that humans are here to lord over all the animals of the earth. Certainly, we’ve done our fair share of harm. Farming cows, for instance, has created such a dependence upon beef and this has begun a vicious cycle of dependency. The way cows are bred, fattened, and slaughtered has become anything but natural, which we are slowly realizing. The same with poultry. Further reliance upon domesticated farm animals for all the world’s food supply would only lead to more of the same.

Instead, responsible hunting and fishing ought to be encouraged and promoted. Given that the minke whale is not in short supply and its ways are being studied carefully, why not allow the Japanese to hunt and eat these creatures?

Yes, I do think about that when I eat pork! And although you may not see them on TV, there are people who try to think very carefully about what they eat and the so-called “meat-pocalypse”, albeit in different ways.

And thanks for the education. I must admit that from scanning these few blog posts alone, I did not know what kind of whales they are hunting and what their status is. Still, I am more interested in humans moving forward to come up with a better standard for deciding what to eat than “it’s not endangered”.

I do not recommend a diet that examines only if a particular food item is on the endangered species list or not. But at least that’s a start, isn’t it?

The better question might be what sort of protocol for raising awareness/protesting do you subscribe to? Does the end justify the means? Can illegal action be overlooked because the end is just?

With the Sea Shepherd, we have illegal action being taken in a terrorist type of activity. The end goal of the Sea Shepherd is to have the Japanese stop hunting the whales, which are not endangered or threatened in any way. What is their reason for not wanting the whales to be hunted? Certainly it’s one of passion, not logic.

I mean they are food after all. I hear you…but a lot of things sound nutty at first! Just a few years ago, a lot of people would have thought it was crazy that interracial marriage could be legal, or even gay sex. Now we celebrate these things as beautiful and natural. Only a few years ago a lot of people thought slaves, non-white races and women shouldn’t have rights either. It’s all a part of the larger historical trend of human history, that we are becoming more tolerant and less violent. We are also understanding that we are animals too, and that without our precious ecosystem we cannot survive.

Every generation, we are separating another step from our sordid history of treating others like objects and commodities to be coldly used and discarded. Acknowledging that very smart animals like whales and dolphins are like us and restraining our violent instincts towards them is another step in the progress towards a more compassionate and peaceful human role on this planet!

Japan should simply exempt itself from the IWC ban and join NAMMCO instead. The JARPA programs are nearly universally recognized as needlessly lethal so as to support commercial whaling. This discredits both the Japanese research community and the Japanese whaling industry, needlessly painting both as participants in an underhanded conspiracy. If the Japanese government came out and said, “We’re going to support our commercial whaling industry”, without any pretense as to calling it research, everyone that isn’t a hard core ecologist will just accept it and move on as they have with every other whaling nation.

Incidentally, this is exactly what the LDP doing.

2) The IWC is the only Internationally recognized regulator of whaling issue the UN differs to them in all matters of whaling as does CCAMLR. There is no laws against whaling only a paper thin gentleman’s agreement which the Japanese follow to the letter. Why isn’t Watson using one of his homemade UN Charter For Nature Warrants to get Peter Bethune released? How could the UN allow Japan to take someone upholding their “laws”? The reason is Watson doesn’t have ANY LEGAL STANDING ON THE ISSUE.

This I didn’t understand, really, doesn’t it demonstrate by itself? Subtracting something from somewhere makes it unavailable for others. It’s. Just. Obvious.
Whalers don’t breed whales (which would suck the same to me but …) they just hunt them making their number lower everytime, making it more difficult to see any of them for anyone.
I live in the mediterranean, here I heard old people telling stories about fishes jumping on boats passing by, or dolphins accompaning other boats … it’s very rare now if not impossible for this to happen, it’s mathematics, not your so much abhorred emotions.
BTW I’m vegan so I don’t eat tunas nor lobsters nor beef nor pigs nor animals in general if you wished to attack me on that side, and I became vegan when I bacame aware of the FACT that I haven’t the right if not in need of to eat (or enslave) a being that can suffer.

I will repeat the exact same thing that I have said on board after board after board. Why is Mr. (he is not a Licensed Captain that I have found which is why his ships are under a certain tonnage and licensed as ‘Yachts.’) But, why is Mr. Watson targeting the Japanese and not the Icelanders or Norwegians who collectively harvest more whales than the Japanese do.

Australian claim to these waters which is only recognized by a handful of nations. This is why the Aussies have nothing to do except comply with Japanese requests for two years in a row while the Sea Sheptards are in Hobart to board and confiscate. It is a very slippery slope legally if you as ‘Joe Nation’ lay claim to waters that stretch into international waters.

Watson loves the attention nothing more, nothing less. He is however risking lives in the southern oceans and that should just be stopped, and stopped by the Japanese. Hey you guys over there in Tokyo, you can only be diplomatic to a point and then you need to step up and show people you mean business.
