Bobby Ologun in an “all Black people look the same” Joke

Nigerian-born Japanese TV personality Bobby Ologun visits a restaurant where the owner tells him he’s been a customer before:

He says it’s his first time. She insists she has a photo of him, and she goes to get it. The photo shows Bob Sapp, not Bobby Ologun, but the owner doesn’t seem to realize it. Either she genuinely thinks they look the same, or it is a scripted joke because Bobby once faced off against Sapp at an MMA event and lost.

I agree, “coincidence” that the picture is of someone Bobby fought before and then lost? I think not.

Actually, I gotta agree with Spector “No one’s eyesight can be THAT bad!” But the story had me laughing. I’ve heard these stupid kind of statements before. All Asians look alike, all Blacks look alike, all Mexicans look alike, all blondes look alike. Seems to me either people don’t get out that much or they are in serious need of a visual acuity, cataract changing makeover. This just goes to show you that ignorance IS totally color blind

The photo was probably placed by the TV staff without Bobby Ologun’s knowledge just to see his reaction.

I never thought saying people look the same is offensive until I started living in US. As an Asian, I do agree Asian people look similar since our facial figure are less extreme and we all have dark hair naturally.

Honestly, I did have trouble differentiating my black class mates in school at first, especially who have darker skin tone.

I would assume the old Japanese lady in the video has probably only met few black people in her life. I think it does take some training to be able to tell the difference. I think the joke is actually on the lady, not on Bobby, at least not entirely.

It’s definitely harder to tell the difference between people when you’re not used to seeing them. Everyone in Japan thinks I like like Leonardo DiCaprio… I look nothing like him. My grandparents think my Japanese friends look similar… they look nothing alike. And the longer I was I Japan, the more I could tell between Japanese/Chinese/Korean/Taiwan. It can still be difficult for me to distinguish between who’s from where, but my Taiwanese friend could tell you an Asian’s location in an instant. But that’s alright, because I can difference between a German and a Frenchman, and East Asians can’t.

But on that US comment, yeah. Here in the US, we have a different meaning for “racism.” In sane countries, it means being prejudiced against someone of a different race for no other reason that their race. In the US, anything that so much as differentiates between two races of people, even if it’s positive (e.g., southern black people make delicious food) is “racist.”
