Many Flavors of Taiyaki

ATV news reports about a chain of taiyaki restaurants that offers a “international” menu:

Taiyaki is usually filled with red bean paste or other Japanese-style ingredients. The Taiyaki offers a variety of country-themed taiyaki, each containing a filling related to that country’s cuisine. Included are India (Cheese Currydog), Germany (German Potato), Italy (tomato sauce, cheese, tuna, corn, and a sausage), France (Almond Chocolate), France II (Strawberry Millefeuille), and USA (Sweet Potato).

The report notes that The Taiyaki has recently opened a branch in Singapore.

Diary, pork and faux curry…seems genuine Indian.
Luckily this is served in Japan and not abroad where all those fake restaurants exists.

As an American, I am insulted they would put something as disgusting as sweet potatoes in anything to be consumed by humans. How dare they associate that poison with the US!

Sweet potatoes are pretty popular in Japan. You can buy them from street vendors during some festivals.

Every time I pass that place I think about trying it but the girl with the taiyaki head creeps me out. I agree with the other posters though, the ingredients seem strange in relation to the regions they represent.

Here is what I think should be in them.
1) India : Vegetarian curry, no cheese, no dog, hopefully with a little spice to it.
2) Germany : Potato is good for Germany, but add a sausage and maybe some sauerkraut.
3) Italy : Get rid of the corn and tuna, possibly add something like onion or asparagus.
4) France : I don’t think France even falls into the top 5 for best chocolate, I’d have gone with Creme Brulee perhaps or some type of eclair.
5) USA : Personally I’d like to see BBQ pulled pork, but that might be too Southern.

They have a sardine flavored one in Singapore. It’s… weird.

Really? I don’t see sardine as Singapore style. But they have a pretty broad range of foods available in Singapore. I have heard of sardines being used in the curry puffs there but I think it’s usually chicken. Maybe a curry puff flavor? For me, I’d vote for either a satay or rendang flavored taiyaki to represent Singapore.

What’s weird is I ate at one the other night in Shibuya… I wanted the German one but they were sold out, settled for cheese curry. What really sold me was the goofy hat the lady working there was wearing – shaped like a giant Taiyaki!!

I’ve seen the Singapore one. It’s a lot cheaper than the prices in the pic!
