Fake Shanghai 2010 Expo Mascot

Well, they didn’t fill the stadium with a CG crowd (that we know of…), but they CG’d the fireworks, and had the “cute” girl lip-synch the Chinese National Anthem. Even the Chinese pirate vendors were using that as an excuse – one of the news shows caught someone selling pirated t-shirts (the real articles were provided by the IOC to athletes and staff, and not sold) and confronted the shop, and the owner used as his defense “Our government faked the opening ceremony, what’s wrong with me selling a fake shirt?”

Sometimes I wonder if all of the 1.6 Billion people living in China are actual, real Chinese or if some of them a really just pirated copies…

That was classic!

I can’t really fault them for using CG fireworks where it was not safe to sue real ones. And I think if I had to have a child perform live in front of the world I’d probably go with lip sync as well. Honestly I thought there presentation of the Olympics was ridiculously impressive. On the other hand I have to say I found it shameful to see a country spend that much money on something so frivolous while so many of it’s people are so poor.
