Shaun White in Japan

American snowboarder Shaun White, who won a gold medal for his halfpipe performance at the Vancouver Olympics is visiting Japan right now. He was interviewed by FTV and TBS:

Shaun has been to this country some 30 times and DVD’s of his snowboarding sell relatively well here. He likes Japanese toys, games, and anime, so both FTV and TBS give him Gundam models as gifts (FTV went a bit overboard).

Soooo why’d Shaun get a nasal-sounding Japanese guy dub over his voice but the other woman, also speaking English, did not? A bit distracting.

Yeah, that dubbing is ridiculous. People can’t read subtitles for 5 minutes?

Actually that guy’s voice sounds familiar, I think they use the same guy for all voiceovers.

But it’s waaaay better than the ‘translation dub’ we get in the U.S. For example if there’s an asian person speaking Japanese, then the producers of the show always pick the most accented ‘Japanese engrish’ speaking guy to voice it over. Always. So annoying and racist!

Just out of curiosity (and thinking you’re out right lying), when was the last time you heard a dub like that in the US using an engrish accent?

Every Discovery Channel documentary ever filmed. I don’t think it’s racism though, I think they just want the viewer to stay in the story.

A Japanese ex-special squadron pilot would sound silly with a Texan accent.

That’s probably more because most documentary filmmakers hire locals as translators, rather than hiring expensive translators to bring along with them.
