Mini tsunami from Chile earthquake

Understandable. There were 15 meters waves near the earthquake area, and in an island close by (Juan fernandez isle) half of the island was flooded as well.
Several coast towns were vanished by the waves here in Chile.

Beaches in Australia were closed. It had an opposite reaction because people flocked to the beach to have a look! Apparently Bondi was packed with cars. Thank god it wasn’t a large tsunami because there would have been a large number of deaths just from car accidents alone.

Better safe than sorry, indeed. I agree with dreaming Artemis. As a child in Grade 6 in 1960, I was to to school picnic on the beach that day. As the tsunami arrived early in the morning, the picnic was cancelled. If it came several hours later, the entire class would have been washed away by giant waves.

I didn’t truly understand how lucky I was back then until I saw videos of the Sumatra tsunami several years ago. Better safe than sorry, yes.

I strongly agree with the above posters. The scientists made their best prediction of an unbelievably complicated event that spanned thousands of miles and is only somewhat understood. Just a few years ago, several hundred thousand people died in Indonesia from the tsunami, many (of course not all) could have survived with ample warning. It’s disgraceful to fault NHK & the government for overhyping this event, when it was possible that the tsunami was going to be as high as 3 meters in some locations. Especially since we have the historical evidence that a very similar earthquake less than 50 years ago caused a major tsunami. Yes, it’s a problem if every earthquake leads to 12 hour new coverage of impending doom that leads to nothing–then people will stop paying attention to the warnings. But it infuriates me to see people in Japan or the U.S. criticizing the scientist’s best recommendations for public safety when they were erring on the side of caution.
