See The Tokyo Marathon Live From a Foreigner’s Forehead

Last year, Joseph Tame made history by recording and broadcasting the 10k of the Tokyo Marathon live via his iphone. This Sunday, he’s looking to repeat the spectacle in a more spectacular fashion to get more spectators watching by running 42 kilometers while using more iphones, assistants, and a bunny outfit.

Get an Android phone and you just need to use one.

Unfortunately an android phone’s battery would give up before the end of the race. By having three iphones each with external batteries we were able to stream for 6 hours without changing batteries on any of the devices.

I know you’re joking because I know for sure that a typical Android phone lasts at least for a whole day.
But hey, there are rumors going around that IPhone OS 4.0 will have multi-task support, so next year one IPhone will be enough. But the battery will probably wear out within a few hours, so better run fast!

The race itself was very tough, with the rain and cold really taking its toll.

The video stream however was a huge success – we had over 13,000 people tune in during the race, and close to 2,000 viewers on our two channels as we crossed the finish line. At that point, we were getting over 1,000 tweets per hour via twitter offering encouragement.

Fuji TV covered it too (there were some comedic moments as I talked to them on the phone for about 20 mins, trying to arrange our next rendezvous spot, as I ran!), as did IT Media news.

We interviewed the talent Bobby during the race, and had a live performance of ‘Sakura’ by a runner with a guitar.

The vast majority of viewers were Japanese, with many commenting on how refreshing it was to see the race from a runners perspective.

Huge thanks to Japan Probe readers and the many thousands of others who tuned in to support us during the race.

When our legs have recovered we’ll think about what to do for our next live action stunt!
