Just like the CNNGO report says, it’s horribly cliché. The lyrics at 2:40 seem very provoking, and using the ‘chopsticks’ tune doesn’t really work when it’s about the Japanese. Overall though, this clip wasn’t the worst representation of ‘Japanese culture’ I’ve seen recorded. Don’t get me wrong, the clip’s still bad.
Least they know more than CNN.

ok, now I feel stupid, leaped without looking, the cnngo states this: “a song that may not be about masturbation as initially believed but is certainly not actually about Japan. In fact, using the song or its title in reference to anything Japanese is probably the greatest cliché of English Japan coverage outside of photos of a geisha talking on a cell phone.”

Well, I did enjoy Charlie’s Angels. That was decent. Not great, but a good laugh.

Since most music videos are utter crap – no matter who wrote them, sang them, performed them, starred in them, appeared next to them, etc – why is this one being judged so harshly?
It’s a cute girl, prancing around Japan, covering a old hit.

My concern is whenever some hollywood start makes a movie/PV with stuff like this, people who have never been to Japan would automatically think this is Japan. If Japanese watch that video, they would think it’s so weird, and some might feel even offended.
Personally I’m not really happy with widespread under-age figures showing their boobs (even though it is merely in anime figure, not real person)in Akihabara. Weird.

My concern is not the sanity of the artist herself, it is message about the people that were filmed behind her in the video.
If you analyze what you see ( press mute), and do not look at the singer ( yes you can), you will be stunned to see how Japanese are “portrayed” here.
Most are filmed stunned ( casual passers by), but most also play along, and looking the way they are while “performing” ( and some really did as cast probably) in the video.
Overall I think this sends a very disturbing message that everything in Japan is superficial, fetishistic, and overly used in all the bad ways imaginable, even schoolgirl uniforms.
Really this is one in a row of videos portraying in an appalling and utterly misconceived way any and all real values of a culture such as one of Japan and its people, clinging to current trends ( in the US) and idolizing them to present that THAT represents the entire nation ( same as MTV is trying).
Truly appalling and sad video, a disgrace and insult even as a joke.

purchasing the rights/stealing the rights… to use one hit wonders is probably a lot easier then battling it out with groups or artists that are still popular now and have established careers….
Also people in their early 30s are now mid career wage earners and are the target market.
Why do you think movies like GI Joe and Transformers get the green light to be made? It is now profitable to do so.
All the rights of toy brands made by HASBRO have been purchased just so they can movies out of them.

What people may or may not know is that this was filmed in Akihabara. Akihabara is well known for it’s chic and clichè. If you have ever been there, it’s like another world. It’s hard to describe in so many words. I’m not going to try. It’s populated with many stores. You can buy anything that you are into there: fashion, anime, electronics, adult, etc . . . . Night life can get equally interesting. That’s when the bars and clubs open. Don’t know who or what you run into. Can be quite a sight.
The video’s a bit off-putting, especially since I went to high school with her. Reunion’s coming up. I have to show everyone there. It would be a hoot.
