Yea, I was going to say the same thing about the iPhone.

In the US I noticed not a lot of people put these dongles on their mobiles, also a cell phone is not as valued in US eyes as in Asia or Europe IMO…because most people get a new phone every few years in the US. In other areas, a good phone lasts 5 years…

that’s what I’ve seen as well…. most of my Japanese
friends seem to be getting new phones every year or two.
They always have to keep up with the newest/coolest
phones, which makes me very jealous. In the US, there
are no cool phones. Even the iPhone is already a few
years old and kind of “old-fashoined” compared to phones
available in Japan.

Japan’s phones are the most overrated garbage I’ve ever seen. An iPhone or Nexus One blows away the best Japanese phone any day.

I don’t think phones are cool here. They mostly got this one design of opening soap box. When they see my 6 years old very crap phone, they are surprised how mobile phone could be so small.

Just go to any other Asian country, you will get better selection of phones than in Japan.

It sure makes it easy to identify your phone, even if two of the same model are side by side.

And since there are thousands if not millions of accessories out there, you can personalize it with things that represent who you are. I’ve had: Moomin, Hanshin Tigers, various items from different temples or shrines, etc. It can be fun!

Plus, they are cheap omiyage!

I really like keychains f.i., the more the merrier.
I mean today you have house keys, work keys, drawer keys, car keys, then usb sticks, id tags, if you own a bike – chain padlock, and if you own a motorcycle those too.

But for the phone, I like something dangling and reminding me if the phone is tiny, it is still there.
Really if it is thin and light, you often forget it, I even hang those whistle-back signaling things to find it if it gets somewhere in the bag, bed or simply call it to see where it is.

Of course you can hang a lot of toys and stuff on it if you like, but it is a preference, buisness wise it does not look very pro but if you do not have to display it at a “serious”
workplace often, why not if you like.

easy to identify phone? i never thought about that, but i guess it could work.

besides, it never cease to amaze me how some japanese people have a LOT of things hanging and the size of it. some could even go as big as the phone itself. makes you wonder where can you put away the phone safely without getting pickpocket’d

About accessories. I do not see around many people, who is hanging that stuff on their mobile devices (I can say it is rare event . First many store their devices in tiny space, second it is producing to much attention, and third nobody want to be robbed because somebody will be provoked, by your nice accessories. So almost everyone have simple strap, or just nothing. And yes, maybe “we have” more conservative looking cell phones, but in our case size matters! And we have much more wider/bigger devices choice. But it is looking fun, Japan is Japan, and they have their “looking good” fashion. Good for them!

No you are IMO wrong.
What you said maybe applies in the Us, where camouflaging everything and “scare” is common.
Everywhere else, not just Japan, the phone accessories are widely sold and carried, France, Germany, UK, you name it, people, especially girls love them, and there are even special chain stores in the EU dedicated just for phone “accessories”.

Global view can be a bit clouded by local sky.;)

I look globally, and yes I (oh my God!) live in Europe . But it was my private opinion, I do not think that my thoughts is “only right true”, and vice versa. I just wrote my private opinion. In my place, I really do not see such things, and I do not say what is wrong or right, it is just very “unusual” for me (no we do not have any special shops, for this stuff). It’s all.

I believe you when you say that phone accessories are widely sold and carried in some EU countries, but I must say that, at least where I live (Madrid, Spain), phone accesories are rare and they are not something common, and this seems to be the case in most of Spain too, I think.

I think Japanese phones look a lot better than the ‘hip’ cell phones you get in Europ or the US.

Well,It’s good business for someone who sells accessories, and is making good money doing it.
People here like to accessorize their stuff, just look at some Kei Jidousha’s, for example, with their dashboards full of stuff.

There’s the whole personality thing, too.
In a society that is governed by uniforms — both salarymen and students have strictly regulated attire — putting charms on your ktai helps you stand out a little bit, helps you show people who you are and what you like. It’s the same with personalising everything you own — you may not be able to wear what you want, but you can decorate what you’re carrying however you want.

I’ve never had the tolerance for cell phone charms (maybe cuz I’m a guy) but it always seems like it would be annoying to have jangly plastic things dangling from your phone all the time….

iPhones are cool to look at with out any accessories on them.. But mostly women like to accessorize their phones, one thing i’ve noticed is there are stylish cases for the iphone and a lot of women iphone users, have it.
