Canadian newspaper can’t tell the difference between Japanese figure skaters

Canada’s National Post ran an article about Japanese figure skater Mao Asada, using a photo of Akiko Suzuki:

Could you recognize that the woman in this photo was not Mao Asada?

Dude, it’s not a facial recognition thing. I mean, they’re not picking her out of a police lineup or trying to find her in a busy café.

It’s just sloppy news reporting.

Seriously. These papers receive press kits before the games with photos and mini-bios of all the medal contenders, especially for popular events like figure skating. All they have to do is copy & paste from the handouts into their articles, and they were too lazy to get even that much right.

Hey, Canucks! How about if we run a photo of Mario Lemieux and label it “Guy Lafleur”?

The article is credited to the AFP. The National Post didn’t write the article. I can’t imagine a whole lot of effort would be put into finding/validating the photo since the entire article is essentially a space-filling, copy-paste job off the news wires. The photo was probably quickly pulled up by a kid doing an internship with the paper and who probably could not care less about the sport of figure skating…

i’ve seen my writing cited without credit in canadian newspapers before, so i’m not at all surprised at the careless journalism here.

somebody had a job, and that job was to inspect the pages before they went to print. they didn’t do that job correctly, and hopefully they’ve been told to be more mindful in the future.
