Japanese TV program introduces “pot dealer” Kiwi husbands

On Saturday night’s episode of “Sekai Fushigi Hakken,” TBS sent a reporter to New Zealand to tour beautiful areas of the country and find out what’s so great about Kiwi husbands. At one point in the program, she interviewed a group of New Zealanders who were wearing “Pot Dealer” t-shirts:

Apparently they were not actual marijuana dealers, but had named their touch rugby team the “pot dealers.” They tell the reporter that kiwi husbands help out around the house by cooking and cleaning.

She visits the home of one “pot dealer,” a former professional rugby player who has a Japanese wife. He is shown teaching his son, a future Kiwi husband, how to clean dishes. His wife says he helps out a lot, while he says she also does a lot for him.

Actually, they only love Kiwi men (for obvious reasons) but unfortunately are unable to tell the difference.

That’s a mighty big can of worms you’re about to open there.

Two potential reasons appear to be listed in the blog entry itself. It’s normally not great to paint a society with a broad brush but there is a strong tendency for these two to be true. Granted, Japan is seeing some of its men contribute more and more to the household work (which is great) but it wouldn’t surprise me if they represented a small but growing minority.

There are many other reasons which I’ll leave to others to explain and discuss, but don’t forget that some people just find foreigners attractive regardless of the two nationalities in play.

Of course you do realize that in almost 80% of Japanese international marriages, the husband is the Japanese partner.

Yes, the majority of international marriages involving a Japanese male are marriages to another asian.

As are the majority of Japanese female/non-Japanese male marriages. Not as large a majority, to be sure (55-60% for Japanese females, over 90% for Japanese males), but still a clear majority. When it comes to international marriage, Japanese women are most likely to marry Koreans (2200 such marriages in 2007). 2nd place goes to Americans with about 1500 marriages, 3rd to Chinese with about 1000 marriages. No other nationality even breaks the 400 mark, and only two break the 200 mark for the year.

The divorce rate for international marriages within Japan is a bit under 50%. That is about 10 points higher than the overall divorce rate of about 38%.

International marriages represented 5.6% of all marriages in Japan in 2007.

To be fair there’s a lot more marijuana here than a lot of other countries.

I think NZ is ranked #2 in the world for illegal cannibis use if I remember correctly.
