Dramatic Prairie Dog meme reaches Super Bowl commercial status

February 9th, 2010 by James

The famous “dramatic chipmunk” internet meme has been used in a CarMax commercial that aired during the Super Bowl:

In case you were wondering what this has to do with Japan: The footage of the prairie dog that became the “chipmunk” of internet legend was from an episode of the Japanese TV show ” Hello! Morning.”

That didn’t work. The music wasn’t dramatic enough, the animal shuffled round instead of turning dramatically, and it looked bored, not wide-eyed.

That’s what you get for being years late for a meme.

Actually – it made it at least twice on the air. 2 commercials featured the dramatic prairie dog. This one and one called “Internet TV” by Vizio Internet Apps. (http://bit.ly/an1PQo) True, it’s more of a beaver, and it uses different music, but the reference is clear.

The noise the girl makes at the end of the video segment is holy-shit-terrible. I imagine it scared the ass outta the prairie dog.

I thought the sound was really cute – but then she’s Tsuji Nozomi, whom I believe is unable to not be really cute.

It’s good to know that Japan Probe delivers all the Japan-related news that I need.

BTW it’s a chipmunk, not a prairie dog. Everybody knows that.
