I am guessing that this is another attempt at trying to brighten a woman’s day. What better way to do that then by reminded them that they have reach 40. I am sure this would make a perfect valentine’s day gift.

Are you kidding? Most Japanese women over 40 look like they have given up caring about their appearance years ago. It is a rare one who makes any attempt after they are married with kids.

This is the explanation I’ve heard many times before:
Single Japanese women in their 40’s now probably entered the workforce and society at large at the height of the economic bubble from the late 80’s to the early 90’s. In the craze, dreams of marrying some high-rolling execs would not have been as far-fetched as it is today in these days of economic recession and frugality.
Basically, these women couldn’t catch a good man back then, but failed to update their expectations or realize the bubble is over, and continued to dream of a wealthy prince charming coming in to sweep them off their feet. Over-estimation of their own worth (in denial of age taking its toll) probably contributed as well.
So now what’s left is old cougars who feel they HAVE to marry some rich guy as vindication or else all the years they waited out will become meaningless, which feeds a vicious cycle of ever slimming chances.
Now this is by no means the case for all single women.
Many have just been working too hard and never bothered to go and find someone to date, and I wish them the best of luck.
But the kinds of women I described above is said to be a common archetype that populate the konkatsu marriage hunting horror stories that abound online.
