The End of Asashoryu?

Mongolian-born sumo grand champion Asashoryu is in deep trouble after drunkenly assaulting a man in Tokyo:
The latest indiscretion by sumo’s perennial “bad boy” purportedly took place outside a nightclub in Tokyo’s Nishiazabu district in the early hours of Jan. 16 during the recent New Year Grand Sumo Tournament.
Asashoryu is alleged to have punched an unidentified man, who reportedly works at the nightclub where the wrestler was drinking, causing the man injuries that included a broken nose, lacerations of the lip and bruises to the back of the head, as reported in the Feb. 4 edition of the weekly magazine Shukan Shincho.
The JSA is set to determine what punishment, if any, Asashoryu will face after its board of directors election Feb. 1.
A few more details from ABC:
….the wrestler punched the man while leaving the club, then offered to talk things over in his car.
It then quoted the victim as telling Asashoryu that the incident was “water under the bridge”.
Asashoryu then reportedly told his driver to take them to a river, saying he would kill the man there.
The man only escaped after screaming out to police who were attending a nearby accident. He was left with a broken nose, a busted lip and bruises to the head.
Unlike the soccer-playing scandal of 2007, this is very serious business. It’s fine for sumo wrestlers to occasionally act like arrogant jerks, but assaulting and threatening to kill people is too much.
Polls, such as the one in the video below, show that the public expects Asashoryu to be banned from the sport:
The last known incident like this took place in 1987, when yokozuna Futahaguro allegedly assaulted the wife of his stablemaster. The JSA voted to accept his “resignation.” Many believe the JSA will follow this precedent and force an end to Asashoryu’s career.

He’s finished. He was lucky to get out of the soccer match bs he got himself into when he was supposedly injured. This will be the end of his reign. What a disgrace.
He was a great rikishi, but it’s too bad he couldn’t control his behavior and act with honor like a yokozuna is supposed to.

I dont’ know all the facts. The press probably don’t know
all the facts.
All I know is that if you go to a nightclub, you should expect
to meet or become a drunk idiot. If the attacker and the
victim have settled the issue, I think the public should just
leave the issue alone. It’s not not the guy did it inside a
sumo ring.
On top of that, the guys is from Mongolia. (not that it’s an
)
excuse for his actions… just one of the contributing
factors, I guess

I’ve heard that the victim was a club owner linked to yakuza.
Not that it changes the fact that Asa assualted, but we do not have all the facts yet.
Personally I love Asa for his might on the Sumo ring.

This incident is a heinous provocation by the Japanese to dethrone Asashoryu. The Japanese people are scared that Asashoryu will surpass Taiho and Chiyonofuji.
Shameless lies with single aim to remove the Mongolian champion. It is no wonder that the news appeared after Asashoryu’s 25th victory. He is still strong and the Japanese are afraid.
Asashoryu is innocent. He is the greatest and will ram his way to thirty-three or more victories.

haha sumo organisation itself has a big connection with yakuza and other wrestlers are using drugs and linked to yakuza as well and this is just hilarious that they are blaming only Asashoryu.
JP media is just idoit and why don’t they highlight yakuza and also rigged matches? Chiyono-fuji and Chiyo-taikai were king of rigged games, everyone knows that.

Who knows?
He has a rep as a rulebreaker, or worse.
But there’s also not a few sumo fans (and sponsors) who hate seeing GAIJIN being the only yokozuna (both gaijin!, oh noes!) and do their best to “expose” his behaviour where they try to help cover up ill behaviour of Japanese rikishi.
But then, Hakuko seems to be doing fine, right? That kind of discredits the racism theory. Though any sumo fan who goes on about the honestly and integrity of the sport.. don’t make me laugh.
The only result is all these scandals can only be bad for sumo.

The point that folks seem to be missing here is that a Yokozuna is supposed to be a hero and role model. This is just one of several incidents involving Asashouryu’s drunkenness and disorderly behaviour in public. This is neither heroic nor worthy of role-model status. Not to mention that although somewhat rare, he’s exhibited some somewhat sketchy behaviour during matches as well (e.g. grabbing hair, ungracious victories, and using over-aggressive energy during yorikiri).
Perhaps much of what is being written here is true; I have no idea, but what it boils down to is conspiracy against Asashouryu. Consider this– How would any such public conspiracy be successful if Asashouryu, himself, had never done anything to fuel the fire? Yakuza-this and Japanese sumo wrestlers cover-up that? That’s the argument here? Or maybe double-standards against gaikokujin in Japan? I’ll spare all of us the “Japan is not the same as lecture.”

When the 2 Russians got the boot for smoking pot there were also 2 Japanese rikishi that tested positive, but their names were never released and no actions were taken. Some rikishi got away with murder (literaly) when the young wrestler was killed during hazing. The JSA (as a whole) doesn’t like foreigners in the sport. People look they other way when Japanese rikishi pay off their bouts (as stated before Chiyotaiki was king of this) but Hakuho and Asashoryu get taken to court for it.
These guys are professional athletes, to think that Japanese yokozuna never got drunk and got in fights is being naive. Don’t give me that “they should have honor” crap.

Asa is a wonderful person, very innocent, childish in a way, and big-hearted. There is no way that he would do a such thing. Besides, he is a Mongolian. Mongolians have a reputation of being very warm, friendly and civilized people.
i’m sure it’s just another japanese scam.

I think the man whose nose he broke, lip he lacerated, and head he bruised would disagree.

The “victim” is now denying that Asashoryu assaulted him … after reportedly receiving more than 15 million yen in out-of-court settlements.

“Mongolians have a reputation of being very warm, friendly and civilized people.”
Well, aside from that whole “Genghis Khan and the Hordes” period…
Wouldn’t that be a great name for a band? “Genghis Khan and the Hordes”…

Allthese ‘honor’ commentators are brainwashed by the media
Were there any criminal charges? Was the guy allegedly beaten up was REALLY beaten up?
Because ‘assault’ as I understand it does NOT involve physical touching,at least in torts.
I think it is all made up, the guy denied alleged assault later on anyway.
The guy is going through some tough times, he was divorced last year, for god’s sake.
GIVE HIM A BREAK OK!
