As an Asian, I can confirm the fact that the shows are marketed to us as variety shows, not game shows. Game shows do in fact require some form of human participation (like Wheel of Fortune etc). These variety shows do various different experiments that they think the audience will enjoy, ranging from food to - like the above clip - animals. The clip was not a demonstration of a competition ;)

Wow! Didn't know dominoes could be so controversial.

Are those
* white dots surrounded by black tile?
* Or black tile with white spots?

Opps, that would be a quiz show. Can quiz shows have animal panelists?

Would they get more laughs than Japanese comedians?

Taking in the fact that the animal handler would have to be paid. Would the cost of the animal panelists exceed the salary of the Japanese comedians?

game show
–noun
a television or radio program in which contestants answer questions or play games of skill or chance in order to win money or other prizes. (Dictionary.com)

A game show is a type of television program in which members of the public or celebrities, sometimes as part of a team, play a game which involves answering questions or solving problems usually for money and/or prizes. On some shows contestants compete against other players or another team while other shows involve contestants playing alone for a good outcome oroie a high score. Game shows often reward players with prizes such as cash, trips and goods and services provided by the show's prize suppliers. (Wikipedia)

This isn't a game. There are no prizes. It was just a few minutes of a longer variety TV program about cute animals, which also did not involve competition for prizes.

They were just having some fun to see what types of animals could walk to their food bowl without knocking down dominoes. You'll note that the turtle, which knocked over the dominoes anyway, ate its food. The winner received no special prize.

Surely you wouldn’t call this reality tv

Actually, so-called "reality TV" shows that air in other countries are much more like game shows than this clip.

Ok, now I 'm confused. What would you call watching animals to see which one would knock down dominoes fastest/best? You see, where I'm from that is called a game-- a game in show format. Game. Show. Surely you wouldn't call this reality tv, or a soap opera, or a panel show, or a dramatization.

"Please get that through your head." Even though you did use the magic word, please don't tell me what to do.
