Stupidity at Coming of Age Ceremonies

Coming of Age celebrations were held across Japan over the weekend. It seems that every year youths show up at these events and do stupid things that make everyone despair over the idiocy of some of today’s young adults. As this video clip shows, this year was no exception:

The report from TBS news starts with a clip of a politician exploding in anger at a crowd of new “adults” at an event in Yokosuka. Apparently some of them just couldn’t shut up during his speech.

Next, we see some young punks who make complete asses of themselves by jumping onto the stage at an event in Sasebo. When the mayor tells them to stop being a nuisance, the crowd applauds.

In Nagoya, several people jumped up onto the stage and asked mayor Takashi Kawamura for autographs. Instead of getting pissed off, the mayor actually granted their request.

Kawamura is awesome, the old yelling guy before him is not.

Seems like this happens every time, so it shouldn’t be much of a surprise anymore and the guy signing autographs seems to have the right idea with ‘just have fun’.

Nice to see some rambunctious behavior in these ceremonies. I attended mine years ago and it was one of the most tedious moments I’ve ever been into.

Truly, these kids should learn early that there is nothing, nothing more important, worthwhile or meaningful than a politician making a speech.

Reminds me of many of the kids around 20 living in the dorms here in Japan with me. Staying up till 3 AM or so loudly laughing and yelling to each-other as they smoke and drink in the hallways.

I bet the ones who act like such total fools are the ones you see hanging out at shibuya as freetas and who act like a bunch of 2 year olds.
There needs to be rule of law and discipline.
If they were highly educated like they should be much of this mindless junk would be reduced.

Oh dear, a form of immature hedonism seems to be present in the Japan Probe comment sections as well.
I’d have hoped by the age of legal adulthood (in Japan for crying out loud) one would realize that one personally “having fun” does not automatically make anything and everything good.

Seriously, people should be well aware of what to expect when attending ceremonies like this. It’ll involve some speeches and generally sitting still. If you don’t like the idea of acting mature for an important occasion, DON’T GO.

I don’t have a problem with partying their asses off, but I do have a problem when people think crashing something like this where that is not expected behavior is “cool”. I bet these people think the Yamanote Halloween train is a good idea too.

You say you’re disagreeing with me, but I think you just misunderstood and are agreeing with me.

If I decided it was great fun to sneak into your house, pour ice water on you while you slept in your bed, throw your television and dog out the second story window, and spray paint your walls, I may personally think it’s loads of fun, but that doesn’t make it okay. That’s being a “dumb schmuck”, as you put it.

If people think those ceremonies were unbearably boring, the right way would have been to either just skip it or better yet, work with the organizers beforehand to liven it up instead of just running around like an ass and pissing everybody else off.
