It’s genuinely nice to see that the puppet isn’t blond and blue-eyed for a change!

Shingo Katori should have a “J” on his sweater! On second thought, it should be “N” for nihongo.

Hmmm, I really had to listen for a second time to catch the ‘so cute – you too’ part. Hopefully the rest of the program will teach them better

I think this is the ultimate dream of Japanese, to be able to learn English from robotic gaijin puppet rather than human beings. That would be so reassuring for them.
nagoriyuki
No. Our ultimate dream is to make perfect robots which can speak English instead of us so that we don’t have to learn English at all.

Ignorance is bliss, isn’t it?

Some people here seem to believe that all English speaking people are gaijin. How backward and prejudiced! The puppet, Eigo, is mini-Shingo apparently.
Spector
No, people think the puppet is white because he has peachy coloured skin like most white people do. Not slightly more brown like most Japanese people do.
Ajapa
Thanks for explanation! I now understand that skin color is far more important issue than anything else for some people!

I met Katori Shingo at a party several years ago and in tow was his personal English teacher who confided in my that his English was absolute garbage and he had no interest in learning.
Annon
A couple years back? Sounds like he was probably prepping for his roll in “Sukiyaki Western Django”. An entirely Japanese cast (except for Tarantino) speaking completely in English, I had to turn on the Japanese subtitles to try and figure out what anyone was saying!
So what? Is there an interesting point to be made here?
Karisu
That he can’t really speak English. I found it quite interesting, if you didn’t then move on.
kevin
hah, after watching sukiyaki western, I would not want this guy advertising English lessons.

I actually like Katori. I enjoyed this commercial. The girl was soooo cute. That a lone made the commercial good for me. In any case, most Japanese I know speak the same level of English as that of Katori. Those that really do speak well are few and far between. But I enjoy their accents so I don’t mind trying to figure out what they are trying to say.
