Tax money spent to create useless rock museum
Ever since the DPJ has been gaining publicity through the drama of its budget cutting panels, FTV has been calling on viewers to submit examples of how tax payer money has been wasted in their communities.
Here is one report about a rock musem in Gifu prefecture:
The museum cost about 1.3 billion yen to construct and requires about 15 million yen a year for upkeep. It only generates 5 million yen in income each year, so that means tax money has to cover the other 10 million.
The main attraction is Japan’s oldest rock, apparently about 2-billion-years-old. Other similarly old rocks have been found in Japan, but this one was the first of its kind discovered, which makes it kind of special.
On the day they visited, only 11 tourists came to the museum. A survey of 50 area residents found that 60% did not think the museum was necessary.
